Hey!

I am currently having issues with my ethernet cable i am running at 2MBPS (download) when i usually run about 30MBPS Nothing is downloading and i know that it is nothing to do with my ISP because i have a completely different PC With a completely different ethernet cable and it runs perfectly. I cant just swap ethernet cables as my router is downstairs and I've had it fitted in so i cant just swap it. i have made sure that there is nothing downloading anywhere and it should just be working as normal, does anyone know how i can fix this issue apart from getting a new ethernet cable?

Thanks.

I physically cannot run this PC on Wi-Fi it just would never work that's the reason for the cable in the first place, and i cannot check for physical damage as it is in a raceway all the way from my router downstairs through a hole into where my pc is. and yes this started last night and i have no idea what the issue could be.

What speed is the cable negotiating it? How are you verifying actual achievable bandwidth?

Are you talking about this? 😕
I can also tell that the ethernet is Extremely slow and is basically unplayable

and on the same website on my other machine i can see its stable at 30MBPS

You may want to edit that to not include your public IP. Either way, what is your Ethernet link negotiating at? For example, my crap work PC is only connected to a 100Mb switch. Likely not the issue but it needs to be verified.

Uhh, how do i get to that? sorry

There are a few different ways.

Settings > Network & Internet > Change Adapter options > right click your Ethernet adapter > Status.

Unless you have done something to that cable yourself, its not issue with cable. Could be router needing to be rebooted. But more likely something wrong on ISP side of things (data cap reached, overdue payment etc.)

Seems unlikely, BT do not have data caps and an overdue payment is more likely to get completely cut off.

I don't THINK its the cable, but on the other hand it shouldn't be running only 100Mbit either unless the PC only has a 100Mbit adapter.  So I can't completely discount a cable issue.

Sudden drop in speeds if cable has not been physically damaged? Also, data caps can be hiddend and not mentioned in open. Sudden drop in speeds fits more to that imo, but without OP responding, impossible to go further.

BT do not cap data, period.  In the UK ISPs are required to be a lot more transparent.

Can there be temporary problems or possibly a line problem as its probably VDSL?  Absolutely.  But it wont be a deliberate speed limit other than Dynamic Line Management possibly capping the line rate due to a fault.

A sudden drop to single-digits most commonly happens when the phone line becomes faulty due to one leg becoming disconnected or loose.  I'd check for crackling or no dial tone at all.
