So I have this old desktop with a Asus P8H61-M LE/USB3 motherboard with bios version 0803 and a Intel Pentium G630, powered by a Chieftec iARENA GPA-350S 350W powersupply. It has successfully been running ubuntu server for the past year or so. I decided to upgrade the old cpu to a "new" from ebay, Intel Core i3-3240. Recived the new cpu and installed to the motherboard and tried turning it on. The fans spun up, power led on the front also turned on, about 2-3 seconds after first pushing the start button everything stops for another 3 seconds before starting all over again. Going through this cycel until i pull out the power cord.

I've tried reinstalling the old Pentium, then it works fine. Anyone that has a clue of what I could try would be very appreciated! Thanks.

Put the old Pentium back in. Download the latest BIOS for the board from Asus which is 4601 and it'll work. 3240 isn't supported until BIOS v3605 and 4104 depending on the revision.

The New Machine: Intel 11700K / Strix Z590-A WIFI II / Patriot Viper Steel 4400MHz 2x8GB / Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC w/ Bykski WB / x4 1TB SSDs (x2 M.2, x2 2.5) / Corsair 5000D Airflow White / EVGA G6 1000W / Custom Loop CPU & GPU

The Rainbow X58: i7 975 Extreme Edition @4.2GHz, Asus Sabertooth X58, 6x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR3-1600 @2000MHz, SP 256GB Gen3 M.2 w/ Sabrent M.2 to PCI-E, Inno3D GTX 580 x2 SLI w/ Heatkiller waterblocks, Custom loop in NZXT Phantom White, Corsair XR7 360 rad hanging off the rear end, 360 slim rad up top. RGB everywhere.

Edit: other people were right only certain BIOS versions supported this CPU. That's what happens when I view a support page from my phone. I miss the BIOS version area XD
