Asrock z87 Extreme 4

Ok so i have version 2.3 and the newest is 2.7    http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z87%20Extreme4/?cat=Download&os=BIOS

I'm wondering if i should update the bios version since it does seem my graphics is under performing but everything else runs fine. I just don't want it to screw up my system.

im getting around 30 FPS in battlefield 3 on the highest settings.

Usually you don't want to update your BIOS until you know for sure something is really wrong. Updating your BIOS is really risky and if not done properly, can render your whole system useless. If you absolutely think that it's your BIOS that's causing the under-performance, then I say do it BUT WITH CAUTION. Otherwise, be safe and don't.

So any idea how to fix the performance issue?

Just a tip for next time: Please quote the person you are replying to, I would never have seen your reply if I hadn't just randomly decided to check back on this thread again.

Anyway, do you have the latest drivers for your GPU? Use GPU-Z and check the loads when you are gaming. If it's not running at a high percentage then it may be because your CPU is bottlenecking your GPU and holding it back. Also, what GPU do you have? Maybe it's just underperforming because you're keeping the settings higher than your GPU can handle.

Thanks for got about that. Yup the latest AMD drivers. I have a sapphire 280x Toxic with an intel cor i7 4770k. i dont think that would bottleneck.

Hmm that's really strange. To be honest, I don't really know what's going on. Is it just BF3 that you're getting low frames in?

im getting around 40 on the highest in crysis, also 40 in AC4. BF3 seems smooth, doesnt feel like 30 FPS at all but i had fraps on and it said 30(not recording), ive had trouble with it before. like the settings wouldnt change from lowest to ultra and got a constant 30. Ive also ran unigine benchamark and found that my PC was 10 FPS slower than another person with a 280x toxic with the same settings.

Make sure you don't have Vsync on or a FPS limiter on. if you get 30FPS no matter what settings then that is your problem.

The one thing to figure out first is if you need to go 2.3-2.7 directly, or one by one. Sometimes this can be an issue! Not all manufacturers include all past updates in every new update!

nope. made sure to turn vsync off in game settings.

Yeah but everything's working fine and there doesn't seem to be any update for graphics cards. so i don't wanna risk it for nothing.

It may be just the game since im getting 40-50 FPS in crysis 3 and only 30  in BF3. But i know im still 10 FPS short.

For my MSI Z87-GD65 motherboard, I always make sure to update to the latest version when possible. I have no problem with it.

Is your GPU close to 100% load when you are playing BF3? If you are updating your bios, it is best to update using a DOS environment. Here's how to make a DOS usb: http://www.howtogeek.com/136987/how-to-create-a-bootable-dos-usb-drive/

What system do you have? Are you controlling your gpu/cpu temps?  I don't think that a bios update will make you perform on bf3.

Anyways, i would suggest:

-Update the bios, ASRock makes a crash-free step, so you should be fine. You also have the update option directly from the UEFI, you just need to be connected to the internet. Lastly, your motherboard has 2 bios chips, so even if one goes corrupt, you can use the other one.

-Clean your system from gpu drivers using http://www.guru3d.com/files_get/display_driver_uninstaller_download,9.html

-reboot and install fresh gpu drivers.

If the problem persists you should monitor your pc using something like AIDA64. Just leave the "system stability" open and it keeps masuring stuff as clocks, voltages, temps, fan speeds, so that you can try to troubleshoot your problem

Thats what im afraid of. Idk if asrock would be so generous.

i wouldnt worry about it youre more than likely to be fine. my computer just simply failed the update and black screened for a half hour before i accepted it had failed and i shut it off. i pointed out to msi that it was THERE update that failed and they replaced it.

Hmm ill see about the bios thing but first im going to swipe the drive. I just need a usb or another drive to put everything on.

94% seems to be normal. Did you try running benchmarks like Heaven and comparing the results to other user's who have a similar setup?

I would not recommend updating your BIOS in the OS environment as that has the greatest chance in bricking your board. I would either updating using the bios or in a DOS environment.

I'll take that as a note for future references, what's the reason to do it in the bios?. I was scared that it might brick the board but my system honestly runs better now than when i first got it and overclocked the cpu.

In my previous experiences BIOS updating software are buggy and in an OS environment there could be applications and services that could interfere with the updating process so thats why I don't recommend it. Actually the safest way is in the DOS environment but updating via the BIOS is safer than in the OS at least.
