Hey Folks, New to the community in LTT.

I have a bunch 6-7 external HDDs including some refurbished hard drives from old laptops. Asking for good DIY suggestions for creating own Network storage accessible to all devices via FTP or something else.

Transfer speed is not an issue, because I was thinking of this as more of a Cold storage. Would be more wonderful if the system is scalable, just plugging in more old hard disks for better storage.

Thanks

Whats your Price range ? Cheapest would just be getting some sata to USB dokcingbays to use as adapters plug all the drives in a USB hub and connect that to a raspberry pi.

You should just make sure that the drive bays are powered externally and not through USB as 7 drives would be too many for all the drives. Then just load Raspbian or whatever it is called now and set up ftp. Should not be more than 150 to 200$ total for all 7 drives and fun little project.

Thanks for the reply.

So will a 60W usb hub like this be sufficient for connecting all HDDs? Assuming I don't connect external power to the disks. Just checked a typical 2.5'' disk consumes 2-3W of power.
