It's time to move on from my i7-6700k and 1660ti which replaced my 980ti that died right before the pandemic shortage. Won a 3080 and mobo combo in the Newegg Shuffle so that's the GPU and mobo I went with. Looking to see any tweaks other people would make to get the most performance out of this build for roughly the same budget. Not looking to get a 5900x since it's overkill for what I need, I think, but let me know what you all think. Also thinking of going for a 360 AIO but not sure if that'll be better or quieter. Any input is appreciated!

Budget (including currency): ~$2500 USD

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Metro Exodus, Halo Infinite, Apex Legends, Hades, Etc. It's only for gaming and internet browsing/watching Twitch and Youtube. No 3D modeling or anything like that.

Other details: Don't need any peripherals, just the PC parts. I have a 27 inch 1440p 165hz Acer monitor and old monitor as a 2nd.

Recommend reconfiguring some things, so you can get more RAM and more storage. You definitely don't need an AIO for a 5600X. The NH-D15S is a more than capable cpu cooler. 🙂

I would personally spend more on a CPU and less on a cooler. Unless you really plan on overcking the bejesus  out of it. and even then, why not just start with the stronger cpu to begin with?

The 5800x is $370 on bh

Ryzen 7 5800x

It often goes on sale from antonline through eBay for $315.. They are an authorized reseller.

The Gammaxx 400 v2 is a very nice budget cooler for $25 and does a good job cooling the 5800x. Link

If you want something beefier you can get an Arctic freezer 34 esports duo for $45. Link

noticing you have $2500 along with a 3080, I might just forget the board and instead for for a 12th gen build, perhaps something like this, it'll perform better than anything AMD currently has to offer

The $2500 was including what I spent on the 3080.

oh, I see, the way you put it made it sound like it was $2500+the GPU/mobo, as you said you won them in something
well, how much is your budget without them, as that definitely changes it

I'd jump to a 5800X and 32GB of ram to have a more balanced build. I would only recommend 6 core CPU and 16GB of ram to more budget/entry level builds. 2500USD is definitely more mid-range to high end build territory. Remember a GPU swap is 5 minutes while a CPU swap can take you much longer. Over buying a CPU saves you time. This coming from a person who bought a 3100 at first and upgraded to 5800x in a few months. Just save yourself the hassle.

It's only about 150 USD to do both these upgrades and you will have a much nicer experience. I think spending the extra ~5% will be well worth it

Thanks, I appreciate the note. Seems like I might want to wait for the 5800x3D though then.

and as for that, Zen 3D is apparently coming out in spring, if you want to wait until then, they claim to have a performance boost above alder lake, then again, Intel will release the 12900KS at around the same time, like I said, up to you
