I am thinking about making a room in my apartment into an entertainment-focused room. it is a decent sized room (11x12 feet). I am thinking about a home theatre in there, and I have thought of a tv (65 inches). As per the speakers I want at least 4 speakers and a subwoofer so a 5.1 (i don't understand 3.1, 5.1, 7.1).
But the room is open, only has 3 walls so there is no wall on one of the sides. I know I can soundproof the 3 other sides, but what about the 4th side? there is no question of covering it up so I cant do that. I just wanted your advice on this.
Can a thick curtain act as a wall? what is the best-case scenario for me here

Any feedback is welcome

Well I guess you could put something like a movable wall there just for sound insulation but I honestly doubt you'll really notice the difference.

My personal HT is also open on one side and on the back and I've never been bothered by it.

Also here's how audio nomenclature works:

Surround Speakers.Subwoofers.heights

So your 4 speakers and 1 sub would be 4.1

I highly suggest upping that to 5.1 which would mean adding a center speaker.

but the blank wall is to the right instead of on the back
that is the reason i am worried for bad sound

Honestly I would suggest you get your audio system, see how you like it and then think about a solution if necessary.

I second the above. It's more a decent/good vs better than a bad vs good situation. Get the system in place and then consider room treatment and sound proofing. My living room is L-shaped and entirely untreated bar furniture. That doesn't mean my 5.1.2 system sounds like crap. The appartment already blocks much more sound than I thought as well. Could it sound better with room treatment? Pretty sure that's yes, but that's easy to assess afterwards. Do pay attention to the recommended positioning for a 5.1 system from e.g. Dolby. Placing the surrounds at their correct positions made a massive difference to the listening experience of movies.

depending on the budget for your AV system............go for less number of surround speakers and get better quality ones............

if listening to music on this AV system is not important, then put more money on the subwoofer........you can then get (smaller) but better quality speakers and the receiver need not be that powerful...........
