Wifi Range / Extender help

Go to solution Solved by Guest willies leg,

First off, get something to measure the wifi signal. Then you'll know if you're making a difference.

It's important to understand most antennas are omnidirectional, so they transmit and receive from all and to all directions. You can "improve signal strength" by focusing the beam in a direction.

You can do that with a directional antenna, a yagi antenna, or even a "cantenna"

Unfortunately the router you have doesn't have the option of an external antenna or removable antenna.

So you can either replace that router or replace the extender with something that does, and get a directional antenna.

But I'd try just moving the antennas first, using your measuring app you might be able to get a better signal.

Also, signal strength will change with the weather, so there's that...

Good luck!

So I have this client that has their home, a barn, and then another barn further away. They are trying to get wifi out in that barn.

The home router is on the closest side of the house as to the first barn. Netgear Nighthawk ac1750

The 1st barn is about 150 feet or so from the house router. Netgear 1200 wifi extender near the front door.

The second barn is a little further back, but about 300 feet away maybe from the house. Netgear 1200 wifi extender above the horse stall.

I went over their originally to get wifi out to the second barn and got it working, but now it will switch back and forward from being connected and not connected.

Kinda of a crummy picture, but this is kinda what it looks like. Bottom rectangle is the house, red is the main router. Blue are windows.

Rectangle in the middle is the first barn with the first extender. Blue is a window.

Partial rectangle on the top is the 2nd barn with the second extender with blue being the horse stall door window.

They do not want to dig up the ground and run an ethernet cable.

example names. not actual

Router SSID : mainwifi-2g , mainwifi-5g

1st extender SSID : mainwifi-2g_ext , mainwifi-5g_ext

  •       Connects to the main router via wifi

2nd extender SSID : mainwifi2-g_ext2 , mainwifi-5g_ext2

  •       Connects to 1st extender via wifi
