I Just thought id start this Topic.

 

People to share there must have Computer tech software.

 

I use

Stuff that makes my life easier/helps me get things done:

• Vim with a good vimrc: Yes, I know it's an editor. But how do you expect me to fix

  config files without a text editor? Or do coding? Or create LateX files?

• Related: PAR. Very nice for formatting your pure text files (of which I have

  many), and it works with Vim, too.

• SSH and SSHFS: Invaluable for network stuff, and unlike many other things which

  require delicate configs to work (samba, NFS), these usually just work as you expect

  them to right out of the box.

• git: It might be kinda weird at first, but once you have gotten far enough to harvest

  some of its awesome benefits, you'll never go back (I've done a few projects with it,

  and it really is very useful).

• ZSH: I like my shells, and this one is phenomenal (recommended: a good zshrc).
• related: xterm & tmux: My reliable duo for efficient terminal work.
• ping and ifconfig: For when you need to know how your internet connection is doing. :lol:
• Android Debug Bridge: Because I need to talk to my phone from my PC.
• Conky: Because I'm a stats whore :lol:

There's probably more but those are the ones that come to mind off the top of my head.

Yes, those are handy tools, but I'm a Fedora and Arch Linux user mainly, and I would not consider all the tools in Backtrack/Kali "must have" tools, in my opinion there is a lot of overlap between packages and there are quite a few not-so-useful packages in there, so I just install the packages I need. As to "must have" tools, I would also recommend clamscan, it's the only way to scan a Windows system for malware that's worth anything. I do recommend using a live linux distro to scan any Windoze machine for malware, with clamav configured with the Google SafeBrowsing definitions, etc... not only is it the only way to scan a Windoze system anywhere securily (as native Windoze scanners pretty much suck for a number of reasons), it's also the cheapest (free) and the most efficient (MUCH faster scan times).
