Wordpress help please ... Moving site on test domain over to real domain

DJRikki

Hey everyone,

Ive been building a new website for a friend who runs a local gym on a test domain and hosting I had doing nothing. Its all ready and Im ready to transplant it over to the real domain but was wondering what the best way of doing this is.

I know I'll have to do some editing of config files and mess around in the phpMyAdmin panel but what is the best method of doing all this?

Thanks in advance for any guidance 🙂

Rik

There are a ton of guides out there that walk you through this exact process, though keep in mind that some hosts are picky about what migration / backup plugins will / won't work on their hosting, depending on the resources available to the hosting account. (Inexpensive shared hosting tends to be more of a problem with this.)

That being said, I prefer to do it the manual way by zipping the entire WordPress install directory and exporting an SQL database dump prior to moving them to the new webhost server. It's more involved, but I prefer it because 1) it keeps my brain sharp and 2) if something goes wrong I can better investigate and fix it.
