Under Optional - which I DO understand the meaning of, btw - I saw this & cannot see where & what it relates to on AMD's own site:

image.png.b28ee21d9b073a47dbfe10b649dcdb4d.png

Does anyone know what it DOES relate to, as the AMD graphics driver I have is the most up to date *non-optional" (on AMD's scale of reckoning) code available; not that Vega56 is in the front of the queue for cutting edge updates.

... and no, I don't know where else to look - or post this, for that matter - to find out what it is.

Did you test boot it, before you built in into the case?

WHY NOT...?!

Don't apply it, it seems quite a few people have got a similar update that breaks part of the Radeon Software. It's likely an old or mismatched driver in the Windows Update Catalogue. https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows11/comments/om3ev0/new_amd_display_driver_3001300022008_that_doesnt/

I would advise disabling driver updates in Windows, they're generally not the latest version and are notoriously bad for GPU drivers in particular.

This is related to teh GPU drivers.

As stated:

If you have a specific problem, one of these drivers might help. Otherwise, automatic updates will keep your drivers up to date.

They are older drivers that you can install, if you have a problem with the newest one.

If the user keeps its drivers up-to-date, they won't be getting Windows Update drivers as those are older.

If the user does not, or forgets, then Windows update is here to help maintain the user system. In addition, it helps the user get started with new hardware that gets added to the system.

I update GPU drivers via AMD - usually prompted by email notification - but I no longer install the optional ones.

My not using bleeding edge components probably helps fuel errant recommendations, so I'll continue to file the above under "errant recommendation".

I do, but I still got this as Optional... seems like a database error as Microsoft increase their push to get Win11 taken up.

Ideally that's how it should work, but unfortunately it's not great at pulling the most recent or even the drivers for the correct device. For GPUs in particular, it's notorious for downgrading GPU drivers. OP has the latest drivers direct from AMD and yet WU is still giving him a driver for the GPU, which in this case is either ancient or for a different product, based on others that have had the same issue.

I fully understand the purpose of Windows update, but for drivers, it's not something I'd recommend using, at least not for GPUs. Also, disabling it for drivers doesn't remove the initial device drivers that Windows applies upon new hardware installation, that functionality still works fine. For someone who's so active on the forum and understands the need for drivers, I'd say it's safe for OP to disable optional driver updates in WU and update them themselves if they need to.

Optional driver updates does not mean new, It means: OLDER drivers, in the case you have problems with the current ones.

As long as the driver I use supports my GPU & works with WoW, Optional Drivers (Windows Update or Official site) don't matter (to me).  🙂
