Want to upgrade current ssd with new one but only 1 slot and dont want to reinstall windows?

currently have Intel 660p NVMe PCIe M.2 512GB and bought Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2 TB PCIe NVMe M.2  and i really dont wan the faf of reinstalling everything but i only have one m.2 slot so unsure how to tranfer it over .

 

I have seen usb to m.2 tools and it seems like it would work with trfer softwere ? but the old one is a smaller sata drive so not sure if it will transfer smoothly?

 

Any suggestions and help would be appreciated!

Get a USB/NVMe kit from Amazon, and then clone the drive using Samsung Data Migration tool.  Going from a smaller to a larger drive is the way it works, the other way around uhm... doesn't fit 🙂

Those M.2 to to USB adapters, as far as I'm aware only work with SATA drives. 

 

What you could get is an M.2 to PCIe adapter, they're really cheap and will work just fine for this. If you don't want/can't do that solution, if you have a spare HDD in the system with 512GB free, you can make an image of the 660p and reapply the image to the new SSD

That's the way you want it. Smaller to bigger works great, the other way around is where you get issues. The biggest problem you might run into is you need to expand the main partition.

 

As for the software you should use, the only one I personally trust is Clonezilla. It's a Linux distro that does a bit for bit copy of whatever data is on the system. It's free and open source, works really fast, and is extremely reliable. If I need to clone something, it's what I go to. It doesn't have as many features as some of the in-Windows cloning utilities, but it's dead reliable and those Windows ones I've always had bad experiences with. Besides, in order to do that image solution, it's the only way I know of.

There are USB to NVMe bridge chips, and they do make USB to NVMe enclosures (I have one 😉)

Clonezilla or Macrium are great free ones, but if he's using a Samsung drive I would definitely use the Samsung Tool, it's fantastic.

 

That said, I will add that just using a 2TB SATA 2.5" drive will produce the same results as a 2TB NVMe drive for 99.99% of uses.  Going NVMe isn't benefiting anything performance wise.

my old one is only a 500gb and was much slower the reason for the 970 was value mostly

I would honestly boot off the 500GB one and add drives for data.  That's why I mention that SATA is just as fast.

 

Or once you've cloned and replaced, use the 500GB as a flash drive in that enclosure.

 

Just don't want the 500GB going to waste, it's still viable even today.

might put the old one in my laptop since ive plenty of space on my pc already, only have one m.2 slot on my motherboard
