Hello!

So I'm pretty new to Linux I've only been daily driving for a couple months now and I'm having a reoccurring issue that is slightly concerning when it happens and I don't know what causes it. At random intervals, commonly within specific games like stellaris for example, the computer will black screen and the cup fan with typically turn completely off. However, a couple of times the fans do go to max power. The issue I'm having is it's now starting to bleed over into other tasks like when I'm multitasking with LibreOffice or using multiple Firefox windows.

Now some things to know is I have the XMP 2.0 profile loaded, 3600 CL 16 Crucial Ballistics, PBO, and a mild gpu overclock (2200, 1.25V). I'm using an AMD 5700G and an Asrock B550M-itx/a motherboard. I know the memory is good as I have ran memtestx86 and I know both my CPU and IGPU are good because I ran GTK stress test and I ran Basemark GPU and non of those applications pointed out any issue and the crash didn't occur when they were taking place.

I have a theory that its just the way Linux is and how pop_os is communicating to other applications. This to me makes a bit of sense because its typically in games that are not natively supported in Linux and run on the steam proton layer or through Lutris. However, I'm happy to be wrong! I do hear some people need to do a fresh install of Pop_os and if that's the case I'd really appreciate some sort of link to a guide to do that since I've never done it before and I really can't lose the documents I have on my computer from college.

Thanks for reading this and thank you for any information you have regarding this issue, have a great day!

Sincerely,

BP

Why don't you just backup the files on a usb or something then reinstall?

Because honestly I didn’t think about it and I don’t believe I have usb that’s large enough to fit all of my files, could I download them to a hard drive, unmount, and the reinstall and get the same result?

Did you try with XMP off or on a different setting? I could be wrong, but it could be that your system is overclocking far too much for what the hardware and OS can cope with. It may sound strange, but you'd be surprised by some quirks that at times turn up with the OS and some bios settings.

Not sure XMP has been thoroughly tested outside of Windows. I'm also not sure System76 would have looked at APUs in a lot of detail for Pop_OS!. Pop_OS! is really designed for the hardware they sell as part of their PC builds and I'm not sure if they ever sold 3600mhz RAM. From the Thelio line-up build page (https://system76.com/desktops/thelio-r1/configure) they only offer 3200Mhz.

So, I'm wondering if something may be getting pushed up or down too far by the XMP settings

Wild shot here, but are you sure it's not the GPU fan? I assume by cup fan you mean CPU, but it sounds like it could be a GPU crash if the screen suddenly goes black and you hear a fan turn off or go to max power.
