LG 34GP950 Monitor; Dimming?

Exoriya

I've purchased this monitor 3 months ago, and so far nothing has beaten it. I've upgraded from a old 1080p monitor. So this thing is a big upgrade. I've been loving it.

I'm not sure if this is a monitor issue, or setting? Maybe this is just normal for these more modern type of monitors. However, I have a issue with dimming? Ive only noticed it while on google chrome, using dark mode. (Didn't try light mode). Everytime I'm browsing, having tabs open. My monitor quickly dims some areas and goes back to normal. Happens in like half a second. Its super quick but just enough to notice.

However, it seems so-far to only happen when I have a application in the back-ground that switches colors, or does something. For a example; I am playing "Dead by Daylight" waiting for a lobby. I am browsing YouTube. My monitor then dims quickly then goes back, and when I check game after it seems I just got into a lobby. So maybe it dims because my game in the background changes?

By going off of this, it does happen when I have no games in the background too. But when I switch tabs, or something it happens randomly but rarely.

Anyone know or experienced this? Much appreciated <3

Unsure this would help as I recently swapped my UW to 34GN850 (one generation older). When mucking around with settings the first time I saw two options that may relate to auto brightness: DSC and Smart Energy Saving. DSC is off by default, and energy saving had it on low which I then turned it off without knowing the effect.

So there's possibility 34GP950 has Smart Energy Saving on default as well, if it's on then try turning it off.

I haven't seen anything regarding to Energy Saving on my monitor. :/

  • 2 weeks later...

Seems like switching to Firefox worked?

I haven't noticed it dim or darken my screen while on firefox.

However, while on Google Chrome, sometimes with a video on another tab / or something in background animated/movie etc. It'll randomly dim/darken the outer layer of my "video" or some content. It would also darken and dim my taskbar. By fixing it, same thing applies. Just moving putting some sort of responsiveness near the area. etc.

Should I still send in for repair or think some sort of google chrome thing? z-z

I was able to capture it.

As you can see, the screen is all dark, and by moving my mouse it fixes the brightness or something.

That doesn't seem like a monitor issue for me, but rather a windows power saving thing. Set your power plan to "high-performance" and see if that changes anything.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

I've already done that. I set it to "Ultimate" as well.

I've already done a reintall of google chrome, as well updated fresh to windows 11. Still happened.

However, I am on a hunch that it might be the latest Nvidia Driver 492.76. I cant exactly remember why/when I updated my driver. Though I know I did while having the monitor. First 1-2 months fine, upgraded nvidia driver "to either fix this issue or just wanted to upgrade" then it all started happening.

(I have bad memory) lol. I am hoping it might be a bug within the Nvidia Driver. I just downgraded to version 492.39, been trying for 30minutes trying to replicate it to happen again, watching youtube videos .Nothing as of yet.

@dotadave
I am hoping that you can give me some information as to what GPU / Driver Version you were or are on while its also happening to you as well.

If you are by chance, using Google Chrome darkmode, and using Nvidia Driver 492.76. It could be it.

Also:::

I haven't encountered this issue before with my old monitor as well. Just started or noticed it this month. So either it was a driver update, or it is the monitor just getting all weird on me. But my currently i have:

I9 9900k
EVGA 3080 TI
750 PSU (gold)
Windows 11 pro (I was also on Windows 10 when it happened).

Everything worked fine. Just hoping it might be the driver now. z-z

Like to update my post.

unfortunately, downgrading Nvidia Driver, and google chrome did not fix the issue.

Only other way of not experiencing this is by using a different browser. Like Firefox. I’ve not yet seen the issue with it. Only thought now is google chrome vs windows version? Idk. I have no idea what is causing it.

This is all I’ve done so far;

- Re-installed Google Chrome.

- Fresh Installed Windows 11.

- Turned high-performance / Ultimate Performance on.

- Played with a few settings in the monitor OSD

-Upgraded / Downgraded Nvidia Drivers.

- Downgraded Google Chrome

- Configured a few settings within Windows 10 / 11 settings. (Turn off stuff, etc).

My current setup is;

CPU: i9 9900k

Mobo: Asus Z390-e

GPU: EVGA 3080 ti

Operating System: Windows 11Pro - Version: 10.0.22000 (Have also tried Windows 10 Pro)

Windows Dark Mode

Google Chrome (Built-in) YouTube Dark mode.

So it's basically a chrome issue? If you liked chrome but need a different browser i'd strongly recommend trying the new Edge. It's currently the best browser anyway imo, having the speed and compatibility of chrome combined with the privacy options of firefox.

I would assume it is. I have no idea why it began doing that. I installed a older version of chrome and driver but still happened. So must be something with windows update that also has the same feature in windows 11 that doesn’t do well with chrome. I don’t know.

but at this time, I’ve yet noticed it in Firefox. I tried replicating it, having many videos playing and in background. No such darkening or weird things happened. So meh. I hope it’s just a software thing.

edge is that good now? Last I heard it sucked, but that was long time ago, so I never given it a chance. Only other browser I remembers using when I was younger was Firefox so I tried that lol. I’ll test edge out

Half a year ago or so they completely remande Edge from scratch using Chromium as a base, which is why it's as good as Chome in many ways and it also offers features on top. That makes it the better choice either way imo.

I just used Edge and the issue appeared as well on YouTube. o.o.

So now I'm thinking it's something to do with "Chromium"? Cause Firefox doesn't.

But what I'm confused about is why is anything related to Chrome / Chromium is making my screen darker than it should be? It's really annoying. I have no idea what is causing it. Clearly it has to be something to do with whatever Edge / Chrome is built on like Chromium, because it doesn't happen with Firefox.. sigh

So for example.. In this video. 45 seconds in the video, he highlights two items that makes the video darker. This is normal obviously. But what Chrome / Edge likes to do, is while the video is that dark both browsers tend to randomly as well darken the outside of the video. Just like the video I provided above. 😕

Will test this new Hotfix once im home. Though I did downgrade Nvidia Driver so idk.

Seems I finally found a fix.

Apparently a Hotfix for a Nvidia Driver was released regarding some issues in YouTube displaying dark area's while idle. I'm not 100% certain that this Hotfix will work, however by having it I haven't encountered the issue while using Google Chrome again. Only time will tell, as it sometimes does it at random. I suppose I didn't downgrade my Nvidia driver far enough xD.

So if anyone is having any of the issues I am facing, try downloading this Hotfix and I hope it works for you. ❤️
