Budget (including currency): 1300-1400 USD

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Fortnite, Snowrunner

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc.)

I'm upgrading from a laptop with no gpu, so my gaming experience has been mediocre. This budget does not include peripherals. I was looking at something like a 5 3600 and an rtx 2060. I will play a 1080p 60fps, so settings most likely cranked all the way. Thanks in advance. 🙂

I do want to point out first that Black Friday is coming up very soon, and pricing (especially on CPUs since Alder Lake just released) is likely to go down very soon, and you will probably be able to get a really good deal on something. If I were to guess, they're probably gonna put 11th Gen Intel CPUs on clearance, so you will probably be able to get something like a 11600k for under $200. Add in a motherboard and a cooler for about $200 (probably less if you know how to shop) in total and you've got a great platform that will destroy the 3600 in performance for not much more money.

That said, these are the two systems you should probably look at buying

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/K8vqxc

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/GjCFBc

Neither of these systems has a GPU, though something like a 6600XT should be obtainable pretty easily, or if you get lucky from AMD Direct a 6700XT should fit in that system just fine. The AMD system will give you better performance and a better upgrade path, and the CPU will probably go on sale sometime around Black Friday. The Intel system you probably shouldn't buy now unless you need the iGPU since you can't get a GPU yet (but then you're better off going Alder Lake), but it will perform on par with the AMD system in gaming (though a few percent behind in production), and I'd bet it will go on a much deeper sale than the AMD system.

If you're gonna buy now/in the next few days, go for the AMD system. If you're gonna wait till Black Friday, see how good the sales on everything are, and go for whichever is cheaper.

Here are some parts I would take a look at. But keep in mind, just as @RONOTHAN##said, that black friday is around the corner and it's usually a good time to buy parts there.

CPU: You want at least a decent 6 Core CPU nowadays. The 5600X has good gaming performance, so I'd go with that. But if there are any intel i7 11700K or something in that regard on sale for the same price, they have 8 cores and might be worth it. But just if they match the price, don't pay any extra for it.

Motherboard: I went with a full size ATX board for more ports and stuff, the Gaming X has good reviews and powerful enough VRM's for your CPU.

Memory: A 2x8GB 3600MHz is a good fit right now, especially since the prices droped because of DDR5. I went with Teamgroup, they usually have low prices. Corsair, Patriot, Crucial and G.Skill are also good brands.

Storage: I went with a 500GB quality SSD. You wont have all the space in the world, but a snappy performance. If you want more storage, get a 2TB Seagate Barracuda as a later upgrade, they usually cost around 50 bucks and are still good for game storage or pictures.

Case: The P360a is a nice case for the money, decent airflow, RGB and 2 included fans, that provide good thermals. You can upgrade to a 3rd fan in the future, but its a great case to start.

PSU: Just a 750w that doesn't spits fire (like the Gigabyte PM). You may be fine with 650w, I just went with 750w to be sure.

I left the GPU for last, as this is the hardest component to get. I went with the 6600XT from AMD, as its faster then the 3060 but a tiny bit slower as the always out of stock 3060TI. if I were you, I would go for the 6600XT, it'll keep you good 1080p performance for the next 3 years. If you can get a 3060TI for a similar price (around 700 bucks), then go for it. Same with the RX6700XT. Usually they cost around 900 bucks, but if you see one on sale for 700, then I would take it. It outperforms the 3060TI.

So my "ranking for the money" is:

RX 6700XT

RTX 3060TI

RX 6600XT

Don't even bother with the RX 6600 non XT or a 3060/2060, as they probably wont give you sufficient gaming performance for the next 3 4 years, at least on 1080p high.

I'll just add, 5600X and 6600XT is best option for you. 1650 is just waste of money, As well as 11600K is waste of money and 12600K is great, But little out of budget.

Don't get me wrong, But this list is the worst you can suggest to new builder who knows nothing and might believe you end and up with garbage system, Never do that again and read post before making list...

I do want to point out that it costs less than a 5600X even with the rest of a system and performs about as well in gaming. There are plenty of reasons to go AMD over that CPU, but I'd put money on it going on a pretty good sale for Black Friday thanks to Alder Lake.

So yeah, for gaming, a good GPU is detremental. A good CPU will help, you need a certain quality to achieve some results, at least a solid 4 core model. But if you want many FPS, a good GPU is important. A 1650 is simply put not a good GPU for gaming. So I would rather get a "last gen" CPU and a good current gen GPU then a current Gen CPU and a very last gen GPU, that was also bad at the time of release. So no point in going that route.

Yeah 5600X should go on sale. I'd say 11400 will be better option than 11600K

Depends on how good the sale is. I wouldn't be surprised if Micro Center sold the 11600k for $150 like they did last year with the 9600k, and I doubt AMD will be able to match that low of a price. Granted this is all speculative, and either chip will be great. I'd just say the 11600k would be better than the 11400 for the right price, especially since you can't find an 11400 for a good price anywhere, and the $30 price difference for 10-15% better performance performance is worth it IMO.
