Hello all, I've just put together my first build and everything is working except for some reason when I try to load windows off my HDD (which worked in my old computer) my computer restarts. I'm currently running linux off of an emergency flash drive I have (pretty fucking happy I thought of that a long time ago) and it's working 100% fine. Does anybody have any idea what I might have done wrong or possible fixes?

You cannot use an old windows install from one PC and use it on another. This wont work you will get a BSOD a few seconds into the windows loading screen.

This is because Your windows installs to the hardware and as such is linked to that hardware (look into Hardware Abstraction Layer).

The only thing you can do is reinstall windows.

So I have to buy a new copy of windows or what?

If your last computer was OEM (aka Dell,HP etc) then yes you will need to buy a new OS.

If your last computer was custom built you can transfer the license from one PC to another just use the install disk and the same licence key.

Actually, technically speaking, to stay everything 100% legit to not have any problem: If he has bought an OEM licenses at a computer stores, then as per the license agreement he agreed upon at the first install, you can't transfer it. In fact the activation will fail if he tries. You can do a phone activation to allow you in, but that has been allowed in the case your old system motherboard broke, and you can't find the exact same model anymore and out of warranty, forcing you to upgrade your entire system. It's Microsoft being nice by not giving you another expense to your list due to a faulty motherboard.

If it's is a retail version (upgrade or full), then no problem.
