Okay...so I recently built a new PC (just a FYI this is a reoccurring issue for years, (have plans to resolve) but just looking for an input. Everything working correctly, internet, parts (memory, storage, and GPU included). I however, considering I have the Cox ultimate package, am only getting like a 90 mb/sec download speed WHEN NOBDY IS ON THE INTERNET (ONLY 9mb/sec when download Warzone). I have spoken to tech support and I am upgrading to the newest router/modem combo (which is meant for gigablast as the tech support individual advised it based on his "diagnosis") at no addition cost if anyone was wondering. If this does not help I have an electrician willing to help and I will call cox technician to give a diagnosis (in person obviously) of what could be causing a package that should be giving close to 500 mb/sec download speed to be under 100 mb/sec. If anyone has suggestions to help internet/download speed it would be appreciated. I will post specs of the parts below if necessary as I would have to use my phone/laptop as none of my files or on this PC yet.

Is this a wired connection or wireless?

Have you tried the basics like swapping out LAN cables? I just had an issue in my home network where one my network cables must not have been crimped good or something. As it worked fine but didnt allow full speeds once I upgraded my internet. Once I swapped out the "bad" cable my speeds literally increased by 5x.

Sorry, but I don't know much regarding cabling, LAN, ect. What cable would I swap out? I am using a new ethernet cable that is directly connected to my PC ( CAT6 wired connect). I honestly do not know how old the one is that runs through the attic to the wall outlet that is connected to the modem, probably a CAT6...(also replacing for the newest Panasonic  modem/router combo tomorrow afternoon). I do know that the ethernet cable that goes from the modem to the outlet, and then the one that goes from the outlet in the game room to my PC are both CAT6... which based on my parts, internet package, ect. is fine. the distance is no more than 50-75 feet for anyone wondering.

That's fine, even that description gives some insight on how it is setup. So my next step in troubleshooting would be to try and hook directly to the modem / router. Do you have another PC or laptop you could connect to them with a cable and test the speed that? OR is your wireless speed better?  If it is it could indicate a problem with either the wiring in the walls to the PC, or the cable between the PC and the wall. Usually the network cable in the wall doesn't go bad, it's usually just a connection problem.

There are a few reasons you might be limited.

  1. Ethernet cabling between you and the router is Cat5 meaning only rated for 100 Mbps.
  2. The Ethernet cabling has a damaged wire(s). 4 wires are needed for 100 Mbps but all 8 are needed for anything above 100 Mbps.
  3. You have interference on the Coax line
    1. Docsis cable internet works on Channel Bonding, basically multiple frequencies are used for downstream and upstream traffic. If interference strikes, it can limit how many channels the modem can lock in to, essentially limiting your speed.

Edit.

You also share bandwidth with the whole neighborhood, so the node could be overloaded as well.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

OK I work for an ISP, so I have some quick input for you.

When you've talked with the Cox techs, what did they say they saw? I'm giving them benefit of the doubt and assuming they didn't see anything like signal issues from an overloaded node or signal issues or provisioning issues (provisioning is what speeds and services the equipment is assigned, or provisioned, to provide.

If they don't see any obvious issues from their side, they could send someone to check other things, but depending on their contract with you, you might incur charges for unnecessary technician visits if nothing is found.

So to avoid that, I'd check some basics first

1. Check connectors, make sure everything is nice and finger tight, power plugs in, etc. Check for any damage to the cords

2. Check the cable. Old Ethernet cables (Cat5) are only rated for up to 100. If it says 5e, it can do up to gig. If you only have cat5, that's your issue.

3. If you're using their modem but you have your own wifi rtr, try connecting straight to the mdm and bypass the third party equip. Run a speed test there, no vpn if you use one. If you're getting great speeds there, you know the mdm is fine and it's down the line

4. If mdm is putting out bad speeds plugged straight in with a cat5e or cat 6 cord, then you probably need Cox to come fix or replace their stuff. There's some other things you can check and get more technical, but generally speaking, anything past this level of troubleshooting is Cox's responsibility.

Insanity is not the absence of sanity, but the willingness to ignore it for a purpose. Chaos is the result of this choice. I relish in both.
