so I kinda messed up and downloaded an old version of windows 10 which won't let me install any updates to a certain point and I've tried using the windows 10 update assistant thing and it fails on the blue screen when it gets to 57% and I'm currently trying to make a usb drive with a newer versions of windows on it and do a fresh install that way but its not working and I keep getting rainbow lines on the bottom of my screen when I try to boot from it.

its just really stressing me out because now my pc is just a fancy potato 😞

Sounds as if the Windows 10 installation is corrupt. Have you tried to run an elevated Command Prompt and do sfc /scannow??

do you mean run command prompt as admin? if so then yes but it says it finds no issues 😕

Yes, that's what I meant.

OK, I would make a new USB installation media drive with the latest version of Windows 10 on it and reinstall Windows. Move any data you do not want to lose onto another drive that is not C: drive if you don't want to lose it.

I haven't got much installed right now so it should be fine but I've used the media app to make a new usb installer but I'm just stumped on how to use it because I restart and press f11 to choose a bootdrive and I select the usb that I have the new version of windows installed on but then I get the rainbow lines and then a blank blue screen. I've also tried going into the bios but I have no idea what the correct way to set it up is 😕

You should just be able to change the boot order inside BIOS and set the USB media thumb drive to the first on the list. This will override the Windows boot manager on your SSD.

Yes, just move it to the front.

There is no such thing as a stupid question or being dumb.

Damn, I'm wondering now if the installation media is borked if you used the same computer to try and create the installation media thumb drive on, or the thumb drive is bad. Are you using one of the USB ports on the rear I/O of the motherboard?

I'm using one of the usb ports on the front of my case but I think it might just be a bad usb seeing as it asked me to repair it hehe

Use the top back usb port.

Make sure there are no other USB devices besides the keybord and mouse.

Also unplug any other storage, that you dont need when installing.

So just have the Keyboard and mouse plugged in, and then the drive you want to install to and the USB stick with the Windows installer.

This will remove a lot of problems one can find trying to freshly install.

If this all has been done already ignore my message. 🙂

Terrifying. Where would one even do that? You should only ever get Windows from Microsoft.

Can you describe in detail how you're doing that? We're hoping the official Microsoft Media Creation tool found here?

Or at least Rufus (which i kinda prefer cus of the more setup options, but that also means its harder to work with)

yes I'm using the official tool to create a new install usb, I'm currently backing up important files before I try again. I was using an official Microsoft windows 10 install usb when I did the fresh install it was just an old one.
