Can I simply move my NVMe to another slot?

Dumb but honest question, my motherboard has two M.2 slots, let's call them A and B.

 

Can I just move my NVMe from A to B, boot it and call it a day?

 

or do I have to re-install drivers or something?

If both slots support NVMe then yes.   If not, no.

Yes you can.

But simply moving it may not work.

Some secondary slot doesn't have NVME support and only support SATA drive.

Also moving it to secondary slots may disable some regular SATA ports.

Check the manual, my advise is to use the main slot as it will be faster theoretically.

• 1 x M.2 connector (Socket 3, M key, type 2242/2260/2280/22110 SATA and PCIe 3.0 x4/x2 SSD support) (M2A_SOCKET)
• 1 x M.2 connector (Socket 3, M key, type 2242/2260/2280 PCIe 3.0 x2 SSD support)(M2B_SOCKET)

It's currently on the second one (M2B_SOCKET)

Moving it is preferred as the M2A socket is an x4 slot, while the M2B socket is an x2.

 

Note they both say PCIe 3.0?  That's your NVMe.  You're good.

Yes it will work, but max 1GB/s on the second slot.

Okie, yeah I installed it in the M2B by accident...

 

It seems fast though, I didn't notice the supposedly half speed, what are the "limits" in read and write for the M2B?

A PCIe 3.0x2 connection can run just under 2GB/s, and x4 just under 4GB/s respectively. This puts NVMe drives at speeds upwards of 2000MB/s compared to your typical SATA III SSD running under 600MB/s. With the upcoming PCIe 4.0 standard NVMe SSDs are only going to get faster, with projected figures at nearly 5000MB/s.

 

* Please note that is white paper, best case, perfect world stuff.  Meaning uber large files for video editing for example.  For gaming and Windows and browsing, you won't notice SATA vs PCIe x2 or PCIe 4.0 x1003334535435(super trillion).
