Hey y’all,

So I’ve been using my newly built PC for about 2 weeks now. I already had a couple concerns regarding load and idle temps. But, now I am really worried something might be wrong. I’m going to attach a couple of pictures showing my temps under load with MSI Afterburner and at idle with HWMonitor.

This is a picture of my CPU temps running Outerworlds:

ZBndWQE.jpg

Here’s an example (also in Outworlds) of a spike in my CPU temps:

A4oxgwY.jpg

Finally, here are two screenshots of my CPU and GPU idle temps on HWInfo with the max and min values.

CPU:

GPU:

Sbvq2Tv.jpg

All in all, these temps seem extremely high to me considering the load. Especially regarding the CPU.

As for the GPU I’m not all that concerned. My temperature target is 83C in afterburner and I have it on Prefer Maximum Performance in Nvidia control panel. So that’s probably introducing a little more heat to my GPU.

The main concern is my CPU so if anyone has any answers that would be great.

My Specs:
GPU: EVGA 3080 Ti FTW3 Ultra Gaming
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5950x
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 (Dual Fan)
RAM: 2x16Gb Crucial Ballistix @ 3600Mhz
MOBO: Asus TUF Gaming x-570-Pro
PSU: Corsair RM850
Case: Corsair 5000D Airflow
Fan Setup: 3 front intake, 3 top exhaust, 1 back exhaust

Any advice would be great.
Thanks!

Run Prime95 and see where your frequency lands. My 5900X on a custom loop still hits 75C in RDR2 at ~20% load, so an NH-D15 hitting that at a little lower isn't super surprising. My guess is that one or two cores are at 100% and running at something like 4.7GHz, so that will drive your temps up on the whole CPU package, especially given how much voltage the default Ryzen algorithm gives. That said, Prime95, Cinebench R23, or some other all core torture test will let you know if there's an actual problem. If in those it hits 90C for an extended period of time, something about your mount is bad. If after some time it levels out at somewhere in the 70s with frequency somewhere around 4.4 give or take, I'd call that normal. The last time I ran Prime95 with my water cooled 5900X, it was leveled out eventually at 4.4GHz with temps in the high 60s.

The question I think would be how often those high temps get hit.  The 70c@14% load strikes me as real high for a desktop.  Perhaps not for a laptop though. Makes me wonder about a possible cooler mismount if it’s a desktop.  Might also have a hot case issue though.  Is there watercooling involved with this?  That’s an entire other can of worms as well.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Thank you for this response and I will most definitely try this. The only question I have is if Prime95 is safe. I’ve heard of it bricking systems in the past.

As more or less a power virus, It is capable of destroying old CPUs that didn’t have throttling capacity.  Newer CPUs are more robust though because they can slow themselves if they get too hot.

In the past, yes there were some issues, but most stuff made within the last 10 years can handle it no problem. I've run it on every system I've owned since I got into PC building (~5-6 years ago) with stuff as old as FX and X58, and nothing I've seen has run into issues.

there are settings in p95 that can damage your cpu, same for in occt and furmark.  There are settings i'd never run on any hardware. I recommend sticking with cinebench r20/23, cpu-z, realbench or blender instead to represent real world workloads.

I do still find the occt memory test to be good for ram if you don't wanna run memtest.

Your temp problems (if there are any during benches) can likely be solved with an undervolt, idle temps mostly doesn't matter.
