After many years of working only on laptops I built a desktop PC around 1.5 months ago. Unfortunately I made the stupid mistake of connecting PCI-e to the CPU and shorted the mainboard, so the PC didn't boot and took damage. I replaced the PSU and mainboard and after that I was able to use the PC. Everything seemed to work fine - no issues at all while using it for development work, web browsing and regular stuff.

When trying to play games however the PC randomly reboots within 30 minutes after starting the game. I first encountered this on Linux when trying to play CS:GO. Then I set up a Windows 10 dual boot and it rebooted once, when I played CS:GO for the first time, but after this crash the game ran stable. And CS:GO is running stable on Windows for a few weeks now.

Yesterday I installed Diablo 2: Resurrected and the issue appeared again - both on Windows and on Linux. After a crash on Linux I always see a Machine Check Error message (attached pictures).

My hardware:

- Mainboard: ROG STRIX B550-E GAMING

- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5900X

- GPU: AMD Radeon 5500XT

- PSU: 650W Corsair

The firmware of the mainboard is up to date. I haven't manually overclocked anything in the BIOS.

I am having a hard time troubleshooting these issues, unfortunately I don't have a replacement CPU/GPU I could test with.

Does anyone have an idea what I could try (maybe some BIOS settings) or how to find the faulty piece of hardware? If I just knew if it was the CPU or GPU (or something else) that is broken that would be great.

Thanks in advance for any tips on how to proceed.

I connected a 6+2 pin PCI-e cable from my PSU to the CPU port on the motherboard, which created a short.

that could certainly be a reason. To me it looks like CPU errors but i dont know much about linux.

And also, you've never really said what the problem is. Just 'this' happens.

What is this? it errors with the text showing? Or does it instantly reboot? Does it BSOD?

When i ask for more specs, don't expect me to know the answer!

Yes the short did damange my hardware. The PSU and motherboard got fried by the short, I brought it to the shop where I bought most of my components and they tested & replaced them. I went there again today but they are not going to replace the CPU. (Which I understand, I was actually surprised they replaced the PSU+MoBo since they knew it was my fault...)

The reboots always happen within the first 30 minutes after launching a game. The game just freezes + there are some audio glitches, and after a few seconds the PC just reboots. On Linux I then get the Hardware Error messages that I linked in my first post, on Windows no message at all.

I suspect that some other component got damaged when the MoBo was shorted and I would like to find out which one so I can replace it. I don't have spare hardware to test with unfortunately. Is there a method to find a faulty hardware component via stress testing? Or are there some settings I could try to change in the BIOS that could help (like over/undervolting)?

Try reseating the RAM and see if you can do a memory test.
Try turning of XMP and see if it continues.
