I’m running an RX 570 in my gaming rig (can’t afford anything better with the inflated GPU prices) and recently added a second monitor to my setup for work purposes. When I use the dual monitor setup, my GPU temp runs quite high with only basic use.  I have an old GT 1030 and I was wondering if I could add it to the second pcie slot on my motherboard just to  drive the second display and not overwork my 570. I don’t want to just try it and have it destroy everything.

It won't destroy anything, but it also won't really help. You can test it to see if there's any performance improvement, but there really won't be.

I’m not looking for performance improvement. I just want to use the 1030 to display to my second monitor.  My RX 570 runs too hot for my liking when I run multiple displays from it.

It generally idles In the mid 30’s. Under full load playing Cyberpunk or similar it gets into the high 70’s to low 80’s and when I use it just to display on 2 monitors it will sit in the high 60’s to low 70’s. Single monitor it really never goes above 50 unless I’m gaming.

What are you doing on your second monitor while gaming that is stressing the GPU? A modern GPU has the horsepower to theoretically run dozens of monitors if it had the necessary outputs. A second monitor shouldn't move the dial unless you're watching video or playing a second game or something.

It’s not even while gaming.  I work in a call center so I take inbound calls via my pc and use web software for data entry. I usually have that open on one display and my kids homeschooling assignments open on the second for grading. Like I said, even stuff like this seems to push the temperature of my gpu into the 60’s. It could be an airflow issue with my case (Corsair icue 4000x rgb). But it doesn’t make since really since it runs at normal temps with a single display.

And if it were another AMD card?  I have another of those as well.

sure, but again, you dont really need it

you may be loading your GPU more by plugging more display into it, but it's nothing compared to one session of gaming

so while i can't say it isnt "damaging" your GPU because it's under a heavier load, i can also say that one session of gaming is probably more "damaging" to it

i put "damaging" in quotation because technically you are increasing the chance of it breaking, but it is what the product is designed to do

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

Right, I get that. But the fact of the matter is that it shouldn’t be spiking temps from just using a second display. Especially while I’m NOT gaming, lol. I have replaced the thermal compound and checked the fan functionality and everything seems to be in working order. I’ve even gone as far as trying different outputs on the card to see if that made a difference. At the end of the day, all I’m doing is looking for a solution to be able to run both displays and NOT degrade my gpu quicker than it should. I can’t afford to buy another gpu given the prices rig it now. I have to make my poor 570 last. Lol.

i have noticed weird idle power consumption on my multi monitor setup on Nvidia GPU as well, so it's not isolated to your specific situation

i'm not too sure on what's exactly wrong with your situation, but my GPU's power consumption would go from 12% or so to 30% when i plug in a second monitor in certain resolution and refresh rate setup, upon further inspection, it is not specific to me alone either and users have been reporting this issue for years, but this is Nvidia GPU, not AMD

I’d like to say I’d just suck it up and run both displays with no care for the temps but, when I bought the 570, it was $200. Now, the same card is going for just under $600, lol. And that’s the same card. If I want anything better, I’ll be forking out much more.

And I’d hate to go back to a single display. Too much to fit on one screen, makes my OCD go crazy.
