Hi,

do you disable the power management of your hard disks?  For example, I have some WDC WD8003FRYZ-0 and HGST HUS726020AL drives in my server, and I have been wondering why there are sometimes awfully long delays when accessing files over NFS.  It turned out that hdparm says that the drives are in standby.  So I disabled the power management as these delays are very annoying.  I'll see if that makes a difference.  Perhaps there is something else causing delays, but drives in standby are a suspicious candidate.

These disks are specified to run 24/7 and not to sleep and cause delays all the time.  Or maybe they are and will be broken soon when I keep APM disabled?  Should I switch between APM disabled when I'm awake and enabled when I'm asleep?  Or will they be broken from all the times they need to spin up and spin down when APM is enabled?  What is behind this, saving energy at the cost of longevity not matter the cost, as is so fashionable nowadays?
