Office PC

lachyman

Hey there,

my mother would like to upgrade her old PC to a new one, as it's pretty slow, noisy and unreliable. She likes how fast my PC is and would like her PC to be just as fast and responsive, also it should be a lot quieter. It doesn't have to be very powerful, it's only going to be used for writing/reading emails, work in MS Office and maybe some multimedia. Apart from the PC she would also like to get a new mouse, keyboard and speakers. She preffers wireless as that's wwhat she's used to from work. Budget is €350 max. I'd also like this to be a Haswell system, as there are some issues with my motherboard and I need to send it for a RMA, I could use my CPU, RAM, GPU and SSD in her system until it returns, also it's good from a combatibility standpoint if anything brakes in the future.

So, this is what I created:

Motherboard:  Asus H81M-E Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($58.99 @ Mac Mall)
Memory:  Kingston 4GB (1 x 4GB) DDR3-1333 Memory  ($36.74 @ Amazon)
Case Fan:  Fractal Design FD-FAN-SSR2-92 24.6 CFM 92mm  Fan  ($8.49 @ Newegg)
Other: Logitech Z120 Speakers ($12.54)
Total: $370.71
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

Well Samsung drives are a bit more expensive and offer less storage, and as an ADATA SSD owner myself I can't say anything bad about the quality.

I would highly suggest adding an HDD as well as that SSD if possible. I know my mum for instance keeps a shit ton of well... Shit on her computer. Mostly pictures. But still. That 128GB will fill up really fast.

Another fine point that slipped my mind. You would likely be better suited with an AMD solution within this price bracket. I'll throw something together for you.

Because I need this to be Haswell compatible and the iGPU doesn't matter, it won't go above 10% usage anyway.

But she isnt doing anything graphics related, G3220 performance is really solid, Its what my work PCs use and what my server uses - really good processor

If the 320GB WD Blue she has now works fine than I can reuse that no problem.

The only thing i would ensure is that it's SATA not IDE.

That should be perfectly fine. I would stay with intel they generally are higher end and for office use you will be perfectly fine. Just am FYI my friend was able to run games like league, WOW, saints row just lower end games on the integrated graphics from intel I know your mom won't be doing that but graphics won't matter. Sounds like a great build.

Why do you need it to be Haswell?

It's written in the OP, I will use it as my performance PC until MSI is done with the RMA of my motherboard which I know from past experience takes really long. That and the added compatibility if anything breaks.

Yeah it's SATA, I was replacing the cable a while ago.

Why isn't anyone suggesting a NUC? Just curious. It is small, clutter free, power efficient, totally silent and fast enough for everyday use.

Here's what I managed to build on that website.
