Hey, so i have a question regarding an OS swap.

Go to solution Solved by Levent,

I also have a HP laptop with the identical specs and also a 850 evo in it. This thing is slow whatever you do, I got linux mint installed on it and that does help quite a bit but still it is bad. Issue with Windows 7 is that drivers, you cannot find drivers for your system. Dont bother with windows 7.

hello, so i have this HP laptop which has an intel celeron n3060 (1.60 Ghz if that helps in any way), and 4Gb of RAM, running windows 10, the thing is quite slow, i heard from somewhere on the internet that if i swap to Windows 7 for example my computer could be faster than now (which would be very helpful), but i´m not so sure if that is true though, so my question is, ¿is it true? and if so ¿should i go to windows 7?, thanks for reading and have a great day.

Note: i don´t have any experience in doing a thing like changing my OS, but i have seen some tutorials where they do something like a USB with windows on it and then they run the BIOS and start the installation from said USB, i guess that would be everything i need, right?

have an awesome day.

I believe so, yes.

NO.

Under no circumstances should you move to Windows 7. It's old and unsafe.

Instead of an older os I would swap to something like linux mint, kubuntu, lubuntu, xubuntu, or arch linux

Instead of moving to an old or unfamiliar OS... maybe grab another bit of RAM and an SSD, if you want to salvage the thing for a bit longer.

Sadly ram and SSD does nothing to improve it. I actually tested a 8G sodimm and it does absolutely nothing. CPU is the main bottleneck here and since its BGA, upgrading it is not feasible. Also if it is the same motherboard as mine, it should also have single DIMM slot and that makes upgrading the ram unfeasible as well.

So this specific model has 2 RAM Slots, so upgrading to 8GB would be pretty cheap.  (But I will say this is an ANNOYING teardown to do.  Thanks for the easy maintenance, HP!)

Given the difficulty of opening it up?  I'd only do it if you're gonna do a full maintenance:
Heatsink / Fan Cleaning, RAM Upgrade and HDD to SSD swap.  This isn't a laptop to just open on a whim.

The  CPU in that machine is going to be a bottleneck regardless as was said above. My work laptop is a 5th gen dual core i3 but I swapped in a SATA SSD and 16GB of RAM but nearly everything you do pegs the CPU at 100% load and things are still super sluggish.
