Raid 0 and Raid 1

Ok, so if I have 2 250Gb SSDs and I put them in Raid 0 can I put those SSDs in a Raid 1 configuration with a 500GB HDD?

No, I don't believe you can. RAID doesn't stack like that, that is why RAID 10 was created, so you can have the benefits Raid 1 and Raid 0 together.

I believe the drives in a RAID array need to match.  So that would rule out any sort of single array involving both an SSD and HDD.

A way to do that would be through software RAID, not that I'd recommend it but it is possible.

raid 10 is what my server uses

 

basically 2 drives are striped in raid 0 for performance, and then a further 2 drives are striped together to mirror the origional array

 

so its like AB = AB

 

downside is you only get the storage from 2 drives, but you can lose up to 2 drives and still keep the array

You could do this using RAID 10 with 2 x 250GB SSDs and 2 x 250GB HDDs, but you'd only get the speed as if you'd put the 2 HDDs in RAID 0.

Basically mixing HDDs and SSDs in RAID is totally pointless 99% of the time. Best use for SSDs in reference to RAID is as cache. You'd be better off putting 4 HDDs in RAID 10 and then using an SSD cache.
