Hey guys this is my plan for my new gaming rig wondering what you think and what you might possibly change?

  • CASE: Cooler Master Storm Haf X - Already purchased
  • MOTHERBOARD: ASUS Maximus VI Extreme
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-4770k
  • CPU COOLER: h220
  • RAM: Corsair Dominator platinum DDR3 1833MHz 16GB
  • SSD: Samsung 840 pro 128 x2
  • GPU: ASUS gtx 780 - gtx 770 - or an amd 8000 series card X2 (all depends on price to performance)
  • PSU: OCZ 1000w
  • HDD: WD blacks 2TB

Anyway what do you guys think?

I still do have time to change various parts until haswell is released D:

Thx guys :P

(Photos are of the Haf x with the nzxt 2m blue led kit which is all I have bought so far :D )

  • MOTHERBOARD: ASUS Maximus VI Extreme - why this board? Is there something that a P8Z88 board or ASRock equivalent can't do or are you going with it because of its RoG status?
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-4770k - Don't know if I would be going with the 4770K either. If it's anything like the 3770K/3570K relationship - you won't notice a difference in gaming.
  • CPU COOLER: h220 - not bad but if you're looking at doing a custom loop further down the road then I would just get a 212 evo and save the money.
  • RAM: Corsair Dominator platinum DDR3 1833MHz 16GB  - 16GB of RAM is overkill for gaming - you'll be lucky to use 6 or 7.
  • SSD: Samsung 840 pro 128 x2 - Why not a 250gb for a bit cheaper?
  • GPU: ASUS 780 - 770 - or 8000 series card X2 (all depends on price to performance)
  • PSU: OCZ 1000w - I daresay 700 series cards will have fairly similar draw to the existing 600 series meaning a single GPU system will be fine on a 600w PSU.
  • HDD: Seagate velociraptor 1TB x2 - really wouldn't bother. 2TB Seagate Barracuda will do the same job and be a hell of a lot quieter. Yes the raptors are a bit faster but are you really going to notice that increase over the noise of them?

It may seem like i'm pulling your list to shreds but I'm merely finding ways in which you can save money with little to no performance degradation.

HA I've got the same case! I did mine a read theme though..

You don't need that much power, but hey, why not ;)

And atm, I would go with that nvidia choice over the amd choice because if the issues surrounding amd cards in crossfire (which probably wont be solved on a hardware level for a couple more revisions/series')..

Well, there is no such thing as a Seagate Velociraptor, so don't buy that. Just get one big SSD becuase it is fast enough as is. Everything else looks good but it definitely isn't optimized for price t preformance. If you want to drop that much cas be my guest but just know the preformance increase drops off a ton after about $1500 for the main parts.

Hey,

in regards to the

-MOBO: it was more so a statues thing and to do with the great history I have had with Asus products

-CPU: sorry forgot to mention will be used for some video editing.

-COOLER: I have been thinking quite about just getting a air cooler and then later on diving into the realms of custom cooling loops :P

-RAM: like I said will benefit video editing and multitasking (which i have a really bad habit of....)

-SSD: was going to attempt a raid, or would you not recommend this, not worth it?

-PSU: was looking into a sli/xfire system :D

-HDD: I am definetly thinking about that though

and thanks its actually good! was wondering what other people would be thinking.

and also sorry if i seem like a bit of an a** with how I replied but just trying to give reasons to justify my decisions :p

RAID 0 arrays of SSD's have their ups and downs. http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storage/display/kigston-hyperx-ssd-raid0.html

I'm personally going to raid two 840 Pro's..

yeah... thats what i plan on doing ;)

Find it quite surprising just how much faster it is in some circumstances......
