A few months ago I replaced my single fan Sapphire Pulse 5500 XT for a MSI Gaming X 5500 XT due to coil whine. My old GPU was ~70 under load, but this one is ~80 under load. Is it good enough or should I try fixing it? Undervolting doesn't seem to make a difference, maybe like 3c

My cooling is like this:

- Antec DP301M

- Antec 120mm stock fan (exhaust)

- Be Quiet! Pure Wings 2 PWM 1600RPM (intake)

80 C is hot but not hot enough to cause concern too much. Does your temperatures improve when you take the side panel off?

Only like 1C difference, not an airflow problem. I've heard the stock fan curve for this card sucks, so I'll try playing with it.

Thats great to hear that its not a airflow  problem in the case. Definitely try playing around with a custom fan curve then. I had a MSI RTX 2070 Gaming X Trio and the fan curve on that sucked. Once I raised the RPMs of the fans, the GPU dropped 10 C.

I managed to get it to ~65c with the fan curve, but I can't get it to run under 30% for some reason so it's loud even when idle. Also the GPU has what sounds like very loud coil whine, do you think it's actually coil whine or could it be a fan going bad?

That's not too terrible for the temperatures with the fan curve. Strange though that it cannot go under 30%. Does the sound grow when the FPS is high in a game?

When I get more FPS it's a higher pitch, but even with 30fps it's there. It also happens with simple animations like the Discord loading screen and seems to come from the GPU and VRM. I already replaced the motherboard with no change

This could be in fact coil whine coming from the GPU. Coil whine is a natural phenomenon and does not affect the performance or reliability/longevity of the graphics card.

That's under load. You can test the cooling perfonce by how fast it cools down after the load. It that is alright then you are all good

Futureproof your builds and try not to fry anything
