Multiple Freezes With No Obvious Cause

Go to solution Solved by yurihellsing,

It froze at about nine minutes into a full Malwarebytes scan. I don't know if this is significant, but the file that was being scanned before the computer froze was C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-mail-app.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_en-us_3e6125eb25947d3f\WinMail.exe.mui

Also, something else that might be of note: there was a power-outage at my house earlier today. My computer was shut down, and I was not at home. Could this have anything to do with it? I guess I would have expected any issues to occur sooner if that were the case.

I'll open it up tomorrow after I get home from class. It is really late where I am. Just so I know what I might be getting into; if (after checking all of the connections and running memtest86) it still freezes, what should I do?

After memtest boot a live CD and see if it freezes when that's running if not then OS reinstall.

The Problem: My computer froze a few minutes ago. The only things running were Chrome, Security Essentials, Realtek HD Audio Manager, Sound Blaster Cinema, Intel Smart Connect, Intel Rapid Storage, and NVIDIA GeForce Experience. Except for Chrome, all of these programs are only visible in taskbar tray. I had to do a hard reset. The computer froze again at the "Windows" screen, so I did another reset. It actually booted up that time, but it seemed a bit slow to me, so I did a normal restart a couple of times to see if it was my imagination. This caused it to freeze again, on my desktop, before the system had fully booted. I built this computer around three months ago, so I'm a bit frantic.

OS: Windows 7 64 bit.

Specs:

CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-L9i
Motherboard: MSI Z87-G43 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB 2.5" Solid State Disk
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 770 2GB Video Card
Case: Corsair 200R ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: Corsair CX 600W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply
Optical Drive: LG UH12NS30 Blu-Ray Reader, DVD/CD Writer

BIOS Version: American Megatrends Inc. V1.3, 6/6/2013

No error messages, and the computer does not beep at me during start up.

Please let me know if you need any more information.

Thanks so much.

Run anti-virus to check if there is something wich might cause some issues. Other is to just reinstall OS

Also i recommend you run Memtest86+ (only and the original. i hate commercial version of this) and let it run three times (passes) before you proceed to check MoBo, and CPU

If it freezes in the middle of the virus scan then shut down and make sure all connections are good and the memory is seated right if still freezes after then download memtest (http://www.memtest86.com/) and run that for a good while to rule out bad RAM.

I'm running memtest now. After that, I'll try Malwarebytes again to see if I can reproduce the error.

None of the SATA connections were loose, and the RAM was in place.

I've never used a live CD before. Is there something specific I should put on it to force the issue, so to speak?

EDIT: Just an update; I ran four passes of memtest with no errors. I've also run a full Malwarebytes scan, a full Security Essentials Scan, and a couple of rounds of Unigine Valley (just to be extra safe). No freezes.

So what now? Could it all have been a fluke?
