Hey guys,

Just looking to purchase a monitor and I'm trying to decide between the two display types. I like to do a decent amount of video editing and I do watch a fair amount of videos and I do like a good contrast ratio.

Now from those uses the natural suggestion would be to go with a VA monitor but I'm not entirely sure that I should. Are there any IPS displays that would provide a decent contrast ratio for what I want? I might add that I have had an IPS monitor but it had discolouration in parts of the screen and so I returned it and swapped it for an TN panel because I didn't think the shop had any displays of the one I had left and so I'm looking for another monitor that is either IPS or VA. How does each display technology compare to each other in terms of colour saturation and contrast ratio?

Sorry for this long spiel but I just need a new decent display, I hope to not make the swap from an IPS display to a TN one again. I only realised after buying it and getting it home how bad of a decision it was.

here is a article on it. i would go IPS personally. better viewing angles. more vibrant colors, i was looking at a va but i went and looked at it and man it was bad compared to ips. I would never get a tn unless i played something like starcraft 2 pro.

hope this helps.

What are your thoughts on the Asus MX239H?

I've read many reviews of people that have bought it and have found it quite amazing in terms of colour reproduction and contrast ratio.

I recenlty got an LG IPS monitor and i'm realy happy with it exept that "IPS glow" think.

If you are not that type of gamer who is crazy about the milliseconds and stuff go with IPS. I playing a lot of games with my new IPS monitor and I don't have any issues.

Other than that colors are prety accurate and they look realistic and contrast I think is fine.

It must be noted that *VA panels have way better contrast than IPS and of course TN.

If you work with dark pictures a lot, or happen to watch a lot of dark scene in movie, or games with dark scenes, then VA is the way to go. So that's its strength.

Else then that, IPS panel the most favorable choice.

Of course, for IPS panel, like in anything.. the higher the budget the better the monitor and colors.

I don't know anything about the Asus MX239H, ASUS is not sending it to reviewers for some reason, or at least not yet.

Thanks mate, that's quite helpful. I did figure that IPS is the better way to go and also they are easier to calibrate because the gamma doesn't shift, unlike TN and VA. So IPS it is then. Speaking of IPS I'm typing this on an iPad 4, so I do realise just how good IPS displays are. I guess one downside, especially when I had my previous monitor, which was an IPS display, that I noticed, when viewing a black screen on an IPS display you'd get a strange rainbow effect when viewing the screen from wide angles. Now I'm guessing VA panels don't do this, but like I just mentioned they are harder to calibrate because the gamma can shift quite a lot when viewing slightly of centre.

rainbow effect? I have never seen any rainbow effect with any IPS panels.

What IPS panel do have ('cause every LCD panel technology has it's set of downsides), it something called "IPS glow". Where on angles, on a full black screen (if you have content, like a wide screen movies, it won't show), on all 4 corners, depending on how you position yourself, you'll see a glow effect... like a back light bleeding, but it disappears as you position yourself to the center.

The fix (well great reduction), is to polarize the grid of the LCD panel, a processor that is very costly, hence only done on select high-end professional grade monitors.

So it's not something you'll see fixed on any consumer grade monitors. At least not any time soon. I think we will see 120Hz IPS panel, before this glow effect reduced.

Maybe the Asus PA248Q? They're also IPS panels. Very happy with them, which makes sense since I bought a second one. Newegg puts them on sale for $280 or so occasionally. I should note that they're 16:10 screens though. Asus does make other 16:9 IPS screens if that's more your speed.

IPS/PLS for sure. I wouldn't bother with any other technology unless I needed 3D or I was a competitive gamer.
