Active backplate for 3080TI?

Beier
Go to solution Solved by Skiiwee29,

The 3080ti has all its chips on the die side. The only reason the 3090 has problems is it has ram chips mounted on the back side and thermal pad/backplate are not really enough to keep them cool. Active backplate is not necessary unless its a 3090 OR the card had split chip, which is unlikely for anything other than the 3090.

Hello

I am looking at water-cooling a 3080 TI Strix OC. I can see that EK has both a passive backplate

EK-Quantum Vector Strix RTX 3070/3080/3090 Backplate - Nickel – EK Webshop (ekwb.com)

And an active one

Active Backplate for the ROG Strix RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 EK water blocks – EK Webshop (ekwb.com)

My question is if the 3080TI has issues with hot memory, like the 3090 highlighted here

NVIDIA, this is NOT ok! - EKWB Active Backplates - YouTube

I am not going to mine on it. It is mainly for gaming, and some machine learning experiments.

My main concern is that the card might die prematurely because it has been running hot.

I will be using the XProto open case, in a similar setup to

The i9 / RTX 3080 PC Build from Another World - YouTube

So the back side of the GPU will be up against the case.

Ah, okay. I saw some pictures of the back PCB with thermal pads, and thought there were memory under that.

I will go with the passive back plate then. Thanks.

Here's the backside of the Strix 3080 Ti as found on this website: https://www.techpowerup.com/review/asus-geforce-rtx-3080-ti-strix-lc-liquid-cooled/3.html

Are those definitely not ram chips under the thermal pads surrounding the GPU?

Nope, just pads to help soak away some of the heat into the backplate is all.

And I've tried that with a CPU putting a thermal pad and waterblock on the back of the socket.

It doesn't help to any meaningful degree even with a 4 core dumping 500W.  Given maybe Asus exposed some more copper or something to help heatsinking out the back but I probably wouldn't be going out of my way to get an active backplate on it.

oh I agree, its almost full placebo affect and has no real actual benefit overall.
