Hi there . So the past week or 2 I've been smelling like a metalic smell near my pc that lasts about a second or 2 . I've checked all the cable connections . Looked for swollen or discolored caps . Tried to smell components to try and determine the source . And nothing . I even replaced my rear exhaust fan that made a slight rubbing noise with a new one but the result was the same

Then while changing the fan out I noticed a noise from the PSU . Could this be the culprit ? I'm not sure if the buzzing was even there before. I tried another outlet tied to a diffrent breaker buy the result is the same .

Any ideas ?

Thanks

Oh also . The PC works fine I guess except for the burnt smell every hour or so . Games don't dip frames at all .

Edit : ok so a bit of an update . I decided to charge my phone a bit earlier . When I plugged my phone into the charger I noticed that the charging brick makes this noise too . I suppose it happens all arround the apartment when something is powered up . I'll be contacting the landlord to do some earth leakage and breaker tests

Update 2 . I spoke to the landlord today and they are aware of an issue at the substation in town . I work pretty close to it and you can hear the thing whirring like crazy . I did find a work arround however . I didn't have my charger arround and decided to just charge the phone with my pc (the pc was off) and the buzzing stopped . The buzz is audible because of the USB's that are powered when the computer is off . I went into bios and enabled ErP S4+S5 to cut all power to the motherboard when the pc is off . The buzzing is no more . And I can finally leave my headphones plugged in to the pc without the lights going all crazy through the night

Hi sorry forgot to list that ... also when the pc is powered on it seems to totally disappear

PSU corsair RM850x

GPU 2080 super x trio

I9900K

16gb x2 3200mhz corsair vengeance

Asus Z370F mobo

Kraken x72

7 antec prizm Argb fans (if that's relevant)

It also has sleeved extensions

When I plug the 24 pin out the sound also disappears but I think that's supposed to happen if I plug it out

Oooh ok so the rm series does this pretty loudly when starting to give power to a computer not all units have this and this isn't a defect but more of a manufacturing goof. Yours also sounds like it does a constant coil whine too so I think you got a fully functional psu with some manufacturing deviances. If it bothers you too much sending it back can be an option.

Oh okay then . I left it plugged in overnight and it still did it the next morning . It doesn't bother me though since I cant hear it when the pc is on and when it's off I have to be seriously close to hear it . I just don't want it to pop though . If its harmless then I'm happy . I still wish I could pinpoint that copper smell though

You can google it and a lot of rm series users experience this issue. It's annoying but safe. Copper smell might be some flux residue. However how old is the psu? That should be gone in at max 6 months since purchase. If it's not I do recommend taking the psu out and into a different room to smell if it is coming from that or somewhere else. If it's coming from the psu and it's older than 6 months and used for a decent amount of time I would consider sending it back as that is abnormal.

Well . The PSU is about 2 . 2 and a half years old .... funny thing . I may or may not have found the smell . It was also in part by pulling a slight prank for being Denied 5G in my area . I posted the story in the off topic category if you're interested. But yeah . The pc is unplugged . I turned on some music . Put it a little loud because my neighbor thinks I wanna listen to his stuff .... and I smelt that copper smell again . But its definitely more noticeable now . I think it might be the subwoofer box where all the speakers connect to

Cant confirm yet but I'll sit here a bit and see if I smell it again

Well not blown up . I think it's normal for the ends of the connections to heat up a bit ... but I mean . I bought some new speakers . They had a bit of an issue with the connections in the tweeters in the left speaker ... I sent them back and my replacements are coming tomorrow .... I kinda feel sorry for my noisy neighbor already

I apologize for the mess .

Edit : there are 2 of these . They've been gone for about 2 weeks

Are these powered or passive speakers? If these are getting powered from the sub or a amp that is not up to the task it can be an issue. Also using to cheap wire can easily cause a burning copper smell as the cheap copper wiring is often copper mixed with scrap metals and that can easily cause this smell when too much power has to go through it.

They get power from this amp

Once again . I apologize for the mess .

Also I think its these smaller speakers causing the burn smell

Oh my I haven't seen genuis speakers in forever :p.

Don't worry about the mess it is what it is.

But yeah you might want to check each and every one to see if the wires haven't started degrading to preven a short from happening and ruin other speakers/the rather nice amp.

My poor old Genius speakers have served me well for quite a few years . It was the first thing I bought when I started my new job . When I get the new speakers back tomorrow I'll be ripping the entire setup apart to do some cable management and rearrange my desk to fit everything together nicely . I'll check if I might have pinched a cable somewhere . I went through the pc again and there is no smell there . It's not plugged in yet I get the occasional copper smell in my room . I think my pc might be safe 🙂

Might be something else then yes. I mean best thing you can do is just take it in another room and wait a bit there. Maybe plug in the pc to see if the smell comes up.

Good idea though. I'll be doing that just to be totally safe
