Games freezing

Pixelfie

Issue:

My games freeze very often. It's not crashing, but I just get 0 fps for a second or so.  It happens in every game, but in Fortnite it seems to be the worst. I feel like it keeps getting worse. It's not a ping issue but the screen just freezes for a second.

Specs:

  • i5-10400F
  • RX 5500 XT
  • 2x8 HyperX Fury RGB 3200
  • ASRock B460M Pro4 (BIOS 1.50)
  • Be Quiet! System Power 9 600w
  • Hyper 212 RGB Black Edition
  • Crucial MX500 500gb
  • WD Scorpio Blue 750gb (~10 years old, got it from an old laptop)

What I tried:

  • DDU
  • Older GPU drivers
  • Reinstall of Windows (Tried 20H1, 20H2, 21H1 and Windows 11 beta)
  • Different GPU (RTX 2060, did a DDU before installing this. Also tried another 5500 XT)
  • Checking temps - CPU is 55c under load and GPU 70
  • Reset BIOS
  • Check usage of everything: CPU 20-30%, GPU 98+%, RAM ~60%. Only for GTA this is different: CPU ~50%, GPU 50-60%, RAM ~60%

Could be a bajillion things.  Anything else running when you do this?

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

Nope. I always close as much as I can. I even tried on a completely fresh install without anything installed. It's slightly better but still lags.

If it’s lag that’s ping, and would be a multiplayer game dependent on internet service.  The thing with that though is the game still generally runs without fps drop, but  other even more annoying things tend to happen like other people don’t move and from their perspective you freeze in place.

Did this issue began happening about a month or two ago when Fortnite season 7 started?
Did you try gaming withouth installing 21H1, using Nvidia drivers of march (without Nvidia experience)?

I built my PC in January and the issue started somewhere in February/March. It may be with the launch of C2 S6 but I'm not sure.

Also I added an extra HDD around that time, an old WD Scorpio Blue 750gb from my old laptop.

I can try that, but the thing is it happens with AMD GPU's too.

Was this old laptop HD reformatted or is it still effectively a system drive for for your old system?

I've cleaned it with Diskpart and I created new partitions, so nothing on the drive

Well the forest is two trees smaller.. still a lot of them though.  Might need some sort of flame thrower solution for speed.  Those can have collateral damage though.
