I'm going to buy a new HP and it is going to have 4 gigs of ram. I will also add an M.2 drive. All of the M.2 drives have the power usage on the label. The only thing I can find on RAM power usage is the new Samsung 64 GB kit which lists 4.6 watts active 1.4 watts idle. HP says I can use 16 GB but others have put 32 GB in these. I'm not interested in pushing the limit in a laptop however if I can buy RAM that uses less power than the standard 16 GB ram that HP uses I will. None of my ram has ever failed and I transfer it to the new laptop when it fits.

I'm finally getting some straight answers to this problem The video shows the power usage of a 16GB DDR4 module from some one who knows what he is doing. at 4800 it is using 3.2 watts idle and 5.8 watts running. It seems only the Samsung has the lower power modules in DDR4 Of course laptop memory uses less power. I will be running 12GB for a while until a sale come along then switch to 16GB. If you don't have a local freegeek then Goodwill now has computer rebuild centers to donate your old stuff to. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOWiwwi7A1g
