External HD: Fast to load files on Mac, slow on PC.

M A J O R

I have an external HD which I use for movies. A quick question regarding load times. On my 10yr old Macbook I plug in the HD, open a Finder (explorer) window and it displays all the files within a second or two and I can scroll smoothly without having to waiti for it to load more as I scroll down the list. On Windows, it's the opposite. I plug it in, wait a few seconds for it to load however many files are visible in the explorer window, but whenever I scroll down 5-10 files it has to load again and again as I scroll down the list. It feels really aweful to use, in contrast to how snappy Windows usually is these days.

Why is this? Is it as simple as Mac forces the drive to load everything and Windows just load whatevers in view?

What type of port are you plugging the HDD into on Windows? I would maker sure that it is not a USB 2.0 port as those ports are capped at 40Mbps transfer speeds.

It could also be the format the videos are in. Windows has to go through extra decoding for some video formats compared to Mac OS. So that could also account for the slowness.

90% of files are MP4, the others are MKV. As for the port, I'm using one on the front panel which are both "SS" 3.0.
