If your feeling confident about it cleaning out is by far the better option, new thermal paste can help too, look for some decent paste in your price range like some kryonaugt, which is aimed at enthusiast for overclocking but should help somewhat with temps, those stands and lap fans and whatever else there is just aren't effective for lowering temps, just put the laptop on a hard flat surface and it will cool itself perfectly fine

Laptop stand is preferable in my opinion, because cooler even though has lot's of fan spin very slowly because they're effectively 12v fan powdered by usb, basically paper weight

Oh and by the way, thick books is perfect for stand just don't cover the intake
