Prepare Dell Optiplex for 24/7 usage

Hello,

I want to use my Dell Optiplex 3020 Micro (4GB RAM; i3 4160; Samsung SSD) to idle steam games (Steam idle master) (for card drops).

The pc is running Windows 10 home. Is there any better OS for this purpose.

And is the pc made for this kind of application. Should i restart it sometimes?

Thanks for your help

Idk about os, debloat windows 10 tho as itll run like crap on anything old, 4gb ram, and hdd

Maybe get windows 7 or 8.1, or maybe you would like the penguin os though im not sure

I think itll be fine as long as temps arent too high

Not Windows 7, as it's out of support and has known unpatched security vulnerabilities. 8.1 is alright but was not designed for desktop.

W10 should be fine enough partly due to the SSD. I wouldn't recommend Linux here as Linux Steam gaming still isn't perfect.

OP, I'd get more RAM if possible. 4GB is fine, but 8GB will make your experience better.

Or just fresh install a new one instead of doing anything like that

Also op, if you can make sure to upgrade the ram if you have the chance to do it...

It'll be fine to run 24/7. I'd use Windows 10 Pro instead of Home, but either way you'll want to disable automatic updates.

Stock Windows 10 will run perfectly fine on the hardware OP has. They have an SSD, not a mechanical hard drive.

Phobos: AMD Ryzen 7 2700, 16GB 3000MHz DDR4, ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 8GB Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070, 2GB Nvidia GeForce GT 1030, 1TB Samsung SSD 980, 450W Corsair CXM, Corsair Carbide 175R, Windows 10 Pro

Polaris: Intel Xeon E5-2697 v2, 32GB 1600MHz DDR3, ASRock X79 Extreme6, 12GB Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080, 6GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, 1TB Crucial MX500, 750W Corsair RM750, Antec SX635, Windows 10 Pro

Pluto: Intel Core i7-2600, 32GB 1600MHz DDR3, ASUS P8Z68-V, 4GB XFX AMD Radeon RX 570, 8GB ASUS AMD Radeon RX 570, 1TB Samsung 860 EVO, 3TB Seagate BarraCuda, 750W EVGA BQ, Fractal Design Focus G, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

York (NAS): Intel Core i5-2400, 16GB 1600MHz DDR3, HP Compaq OEM, 240GB Kingston V300 (boot), 3x2TB Seagate BarraCuda, 320W HP PSU, HP Compaq 6200 Pro, TrueNAS CORE (12.0)

*runs out of ram*

Windows has entered slideshow slow loading mode

xD jokes aside my dads craptop has a non debloated w10 install and ive already deleted dptf and set power limits to max so itll run at 2.5ghz and not a measly 1.9ghz

Still quite slow, prob a combination of shit ram, shit cpu, and shit hard drive cause sometimes it just becomes unresponsive which i mostly suspect to be the cpu or hdd being peices of crap, ram is only 4gb single channel which sucks, not sure if its upgradable tho, will prob run 10x better on linux and its not even used for gaming anyways

Op will prob be somewhat ok but for the love of god upgrade the ram so it doesnt run like crap

Use Dell Command Update to apply the latest firmware/drivers available for your optiplex. If you are going to run the system 24/7 having the newest most stable available firmware definitely helps! Other than that all the recommendations above are quite solid. I would also give it a deep cleaning/repaste before putting it on operation.
