So I am looking for a NAS to be a media server/backup for baby photos etc. so far this is my top choice. Do you guys have any other ideas.

that looks ok but the WD my cloud looks like a pretty good NAS solution

Looks decent but if you have a spare, unused computer that can hold a couple hard-drives you can install FreeNAS on it and make your own NAS/Media Server so you don't have to buy the enclosure, just the drives.

For a media server though

yeah if you go to their website you can play videos and look at pictures through the app that you can use on windows, mac, android, and ios

The Netgear ReadyNAS 104 is a bit cheaper and has 4 bays so you can upgrade in the future and the software looks pretty good on it. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822122135&ignorebbr=1

It's simple, Synology is a reputable solutions provider, and they have some of the best technical support around. Go for it.
