Hey guys, I found an Audiotechnica AT 2020 for $50 at guitar center!  But the problem is, it's the xlr version.  So I would need something (I think it's called a preamp or something) to use it on my computer.  Is there something I could get that would actually be worth getting that wouldn't completely blow all the money I would save getting the xlr version?  Help is needed quickly please.  Thank you!

I'm not very educated on audio technology but I think you would be able to use an XLR to USB adapter to use it :)

Adapter cable: http://www.ebay.com/itm/XLR-Female-to-USB-Male-3m-9ft-Black-Cable-Cord-Adapter-Microphone-Link-/360658115517

My Current Build:

You need an audio interface with a phantom power built-in.

A blue icicle is the most simple one. One XLR, one USB.

Or if you want something more check some basic audio interface, i have a scarlett 2i2, you can also check for a presonus AudioBox, but it goes over 150$.

I personally use a yamaha audiogram 6 its about 130$ but the blue icicle and the usb adapter might work, If I were on a budget I wouldn't risk it but you could try it but if your on a budget then Behringer might have something I don't remember it's been a while since I've been shopping for preamps

Why do you always die right after I fix you?

I think the Blue Icicle might be your best bet but it sucks that it will cost another $60 :/

For $60 the OP would better off with http://www.amazon.com/Behringer-802-Premium-8-Input-Preamps/dp/B000J5XS3C

That way you have more control and he ability to record 2 mics and 2 line souces (ipod, elec piano, etc)

I personally own that and my only complaint would be lack of rubber feet.

Just to save 15 you loose a decent eq and the ability to have 2 mics. plus it looks too basic.

Fair point, but sometimes less complication is good for beginners.

It doesn't seem to have USB, so how would he connect it to his computer? Should he buy an ADAC to go along with it?

Adding in the price of an ADAC, he might as well buy a 2i2 which has better preamps.

Then why have "nice" preamps when you ruin it with the shitty onboard ADAC? :P
