Hi, I'm looking for expert advice on my first upgrade for my build which is 1 year old. Currently I am facing some frame lag while playing Forza / Genshin. Not major but happens off and on, I have some concerns with the longevity of my PC.

Below is the build of my pc:

  1. Processor: Intel i5-10400
  2. Mobo: MSI MPG Z490 GAMING Plus, LGA1200
  3. C-Drive: 550GB/1TB free-HP 2.5" M. 2 PCI-E NVME SSD EX900
  4. D-Drive: 200GB/500GB Adata SX8200 Pro
  5. Graphics Card: MSI RTX 2060 SUPER VENTUS OC, 6GB
  6. RAM: Hyper X 3200MHz 16GB (single)
  7. PSU: DK 6.0 (PS-600AX)
  8. Case: 1st Player Firerose F4 ATX Case
  9. Running on stock Intel fan on Processor

While playing even Genshin, I'll experience some frame lags but usually happens after Windows Update.

Looking for any possible upgrade with the best price per functionality would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

Budget (including currency): RM2,000

Country: Malaysia

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Games mostly, Forza as benchmark and browsing for usual tasks

Other details N/A

so adding more ram (the same kind) to make it dual channel will help, also try to upgrade your cooler to like an NHU-12S redux

How about Masterair Ma410P? Any better than our default cooler? Or any aio of the similar performance of the noctua unit as mentioned?

Buy another stick of ram 8gb or 16gb cause single channel cripples cpu performance

For the cooler id suggest gammax 400, hyper h411r or freezer 34 (non esport non duo) these coolers will be much better than some crappy stock intel cooler while being rather cheap

Also if you can, go into the bios and lock the max multi of your cpu cause z series motherboards can lock your max multiplier on a non k cpu (makes it run at max turbo boost all the time) though upgrade the cooler first before doing this xD

First thing I would do is change that psu. Something from Tier B/A would be much better. Your current unit is on Tier D.

Does it make a real world difference?

No unless youve gone for a weird or questionable brand

Does it help with not killing your entire system?

Yes cause crap psus will prob blow up if you put a heavy load on them but good psus will last a long while before they blow up or not even blow up at all

The Brand has nothing to do with psu quality. You have a well known brands such as CoolerMaster and Gigabyte with a psu on Tier E.

Get an external 4Tb usb drive and back up software as your first upgrade. Now you can back up the C & D drive 🙂

Back up has to be the first real upgrade and so useful when something goes bad.

Other then that, you should look at the motherboards spec page as it tells you what you can upgrade and what limits you face. For instance you can only upgrade to another series 10 CPU, not a series 11. You can add another NVMe, but only Gen 3, you can add more RAM and of a faster type if you replace what you have too and so on.

But bigger the beast the larger the PSU you'll need.

Then other then other then that, look at the game specs. It tells you for best results use an i7 or higher CPU. i5 is the minimum requirement for Genshin.

Greater CPUs need better cooling too. So stock or 3rd party? water or air?

The Z490 chipset supports 11th gen. Not really worth it though as the 11700K/11900K are both meh.

I looked at the motherboards web page and it either has not been updated or it only supports series 10 CPU's.

MSI UK

further browsing on their site revealed the boards BIOS has been updated to support series 11 so ....

Yeah you need a bios update, but the 11th gen is backwards compatible on 'Z' 400 series chipset. Think it is only the lower B460/H410 etc that lose out.
