Processor start timeout

hello, has anyone had a blue screen  that says

 

Processor start timeout 

 

this does not come on every time but 8 out of 10 starts.

I updated the bios, reinstalled windows on a format ssd. Still the same.  contacted Microsoft support who told me it was drivers and then that its my processor.

 

I just wondered if anyone on here has had this happen?

have you overclocked your cpu?

nope no overclock.  why is it something you would expect to see if the pc was overclocked?

Yes I have had this problem twice. Both times when the system is restarting from a software update. I don't know for sure, but it appears that the update sets a power reset flag, that actually repowers the PC. In the last instance the PC sat there with the power light on but no cpu fan or monitor signal. I pressed and held the power button and it powered up, but with the blue screen. It then went into loop doing a full bios reboot alternating with a soft boot (no bios screen), but each time a blue screen.

I powered the PC off for 24 hours. Re-powered with exactly the same problem. I then held the power button until it powered down (sort of), as it still had the power light, cpu fan and monitor signal although the screen was blank. I pressed the power button again and system booted clean.

I am going to research bios version as I think it might be something in the latest windows 10 that is trying to set a bios flag to do with a soft restart but isn't succeeding fully and leaving it in some weird state that windows thinks the cpu hasn't started. Not sure why it would think this as obviously the cpu has started or the screen would be blank.

Hope someone from Microsoft or ASUS (motherboard) sees this post.

Out of curiosity did you ever solve this? Built my mate a pc also with a i7 4790k and asus mobo and it’s also having the processor_start_timeout error code

any help would be appreciated :)
