Ethernet file transfer?

da na
Go to solution Solved by Kilrah,

You do not need a crossover cable, all gigabit NICs can cross automatically, that's been standard for >10 years.

You just need to configure IPs manually on both sides.

Excuse the stupid question, I'm a noob when it comes to networking. Can I connect 2 computers by an Ethernet cable and have a connection between them over which I can send files? To clarify there's nothing in between them, just 2 PCs and an Ethernet cable.

Thanks in advance!

If you use usual network cables, you will need a switch or router inbetween.
If you only want one cable, you will need a special crossover cable.

Thanks for the update.

I'm using a CAT6e in my home right now, to link my desktop to my main UnRAID server using 10gbps.聽 The rest of my network is 1gbps, but I setup the direct 10gbps link since, well, 10gig copper switches are prohibitively expensive.

Yeah as said it doesnt matter if your cable is direct or crossed, both will work.

Only thing you might need to do since Windows still hasnt got a proper DHCP server is manualy set up IP's.

If you dont know how to do that, just ask. 馃檪 (ps when asking tell us you OS (which version of Windows you have)).

When i ask for more specs, don't expect me to know the answer!
