Depends on the model. While most external drives just use a standard SATA drive that can be removed from the housing and put in a normal computer, there are some that use non-standard drives that cannot be used in that way. 

 

It's also worth noting that a lot of external drive now days use the 3rd pin as a reset when it receives a 3.3v signal. Most PSUs aren't compatible with these drives and they will not spin up when connected to SATA power from the PSU. There are several ways around it, such as using kapton tape to block the 3rd pin or using molex to SATA adapters. If you Google 3.3v issue you'll find multiple sites and videos explaining the issue and how to bypass it.

It's typically only WD that has that 3.3V issue. They're also the ones to make 2.5" drives with direct USB interface instead of SATA+an adapter.

i was going to say I was going to use it as extra storage, adding ontop of 500 GB Adata storage and still trying to get a m.2. hopefully my pc could handle all that storage. A wise man once said "you could never have to much storage" if thats possible
