What do you want to test? If the cable works? Speed? ...?

Cables

There are cable testers on Amazon for around £3. They will tell you if the cable is wired correctly. There are also devices that will help you follow and find cables in bunches of other cables. They cost quite a lot more though.

Then there are these things:

Do those things work on Ethernet, or are they exclusively for phone line?

Those are for following specific cables in bunches. They are pretty amazing to see IRL.

They will work with any 4 pair copper cable.

Cool.

My work place owns one (I'm an IT Operator). We use it to punch phone lines to cubicles. I haven't tried it with Ethernet, but the connector and Female to Female adapter is both for RJ11/12. He'd probably need to buy a different adapter to use it with Ethernet (the RJ45 connector is slightly bigger than RJ11/12 IIRC).

We also have a Cable tester, and it works for both because the port is big enough for RJ45 but accommodates RJ11/12 as well.

OT:

Interestingly, I can hear the tone without the amplifier. Depending on where it's connected on the phone board.

Mainly RJ45 but RJ11/12 may come in handy.
