I am looking to buy laptop for work, but I am Machine learning/Computer vision engineer, so I need a good GPU inside as well. I don’t mind paying couple of thousands for laptop as long as it satisfy my work needs.

 

Some basic specs I need:

  • 15’’ touchscreen display
  • Good GPU, prob 3070+, Quadro is fine as well as long as I get more GPU memory
  • 16 or ideally 32 GB or RAM
  • At least 1TB or SSD/Nvme space
  • Higher end processor (8 cores/16 threads)
  • I would be traveling with it a lot so lighter, more compact designs have advantage.

Any suggestions?

Before considering my recommendations, do you have a budget, because this is really important to consider, too. I'm going into college soon for Mechanical Engineering, and I ordered a 2020 model Dell XPS 17 with an i9-10885H, 32 GB of ram, base 1920*1200p non-touch display, 1 TB SSD, and an NVIDIA 2060 Max-Q (6 GB video memory). Compared to Dell's precision laptops, the XPS is basically the consumer version whereas the precision laptops are considered the business/ professional versions, especially because they're equipped with Quadro GPU's. If you need at least need 8 GB of video memory, laptops equipped with the Quadro RTX 4000 seem fitting. However, I think the most bang-for-your buck GPU would be the Quadro RTX 5000, since it has 16 GB of video ram and is only the next one up above the RTX 4000. And another note, it seems like you'd have to buy a Precision 7760 Workstation instead of the 5760 or 5750 (the 57__ is the same thin chassis as the XPS 17, Precision 7760 has a much bulkier chassis)

 

Here's a page off of Dell's website where you can configure a Precision 7760 to your liking. Be weary, though, the RTX A5000 alone costs a cool $2,180 when configuring the laptop.

@mt123, I don't really have budget (I am fine paying like 3000-4000$ for laptop as long as it suits my needs as I expect for it to be returning like 4-5x of that monthly). I don't need 4K so 1440p would be really nice.

That Razer honestly seems pretty good, especially considering the 16 GB of video memory, and honestly this is really making me reconsider my XPS 17, lmao. If you can afford it, I think you should go for it.

 

However, I recommend doing some research to see how a GeForce RTX GPU performs compared to a Quadro RTX GPU in your machine learning/ computer vision engineer applications, and go towards the one with better performance in your work applications. Like I said, the Quadro RTX A5000 also has 16 GB of video memory, and you can even find this in a Razer 15 inch laptop, too for what I think is a reasonable price: https://www.razer.com/gaming-laptops/Razer-Blade-15/RZ09-0330QEM3-R3U1

Wouldn't a lightweight laptop with longer battery life (without a dedicated GPU) and a good server with a proper GPU (such as a V100) suffice?

There's no difference between using a Quadro or GeForce for ML applications, unlike some CAD software. It just boils down to the amount of cores and vram available, with the Quadros usually having more vram when compared to their GeForce counterpart.

Yeah and I have desktop GPU that I can remote to run some more complicated stuff as well but I am working more on research side and for example I worked on depth stereo matching algorithm and I implemented it in Python with CUDA (numba) and would hate if I had to remote or run some server command every time I want to ctrl+f5 to test how improved changes work on just one pair of images. It would slow down the process significantly. Here I could run and get results in less than 1sec without any wary about internet connection and stuff like that. Also, it's good for occasiona gaming 🙂
