External HDD keeps reconnecting

I have an old, external 500GB HDD that has been already giving me problems a year or two ago (randomly disconnecting) but now it keeps reconnecting every 1-2 seconds, meaning I can't get anything off of it quick enough before it disconnects. Is there anything to do about this or can I consider it dead.

What you are describing sounds like the hard drive itself is fine, it's the enclosure. You could open the enclosure and hook the hard drive up via another means. Most enclosures have standard hard drives in them (whether it be a 2.5" or 3.5"). That would at least let you have access to the data.
