PSU, don't know if I can keep one I have

JasonBD

Hey everyone,

I just bought a new motherboard and I realized that the CPU has a 8+4 pin for power.

My current mobo has 8 pin only.

What I was wondering is if I can use a free 8 pin slot I have on my current PSU and get a new 8 to 4+4 psu cable or if I need to buy a new PSU.

My build :

1 x HDD

2 x SSD

1 x DVD drive

GTX 1060 FE 6gb VRAM

Ryzen 5900x (I just ordered this)

My current Items

PSU : https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/47mLrH/corsair-power-supply-rm750

MOBO : https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/jrkD4D/asus-motherboard-p8z77v

New MOBO : https://www.newegg.ca/asus-rog-strix-x570-e-gaming/p/N82E16813119111?Item=N82E16813119111

Thanks for the help.

You'll be completely fine with just the 8 pin. Ryzen CPUs will practically never need more than probably even an 4 pin, but obviously going 8 pin anyway won't do any harm. You won't need a new PSU.

My bro has a spare PSU cable that is a 8 to 4+4. Is using it not recommended since it's not something my PSU was built for at the time or will no harm come if I just slap on that cable (or is it absoluetely unnecessary to add it since it won't be using full 8 pin pwer anyhow?)

Do NOT use a PSU cable that was made for a different PSU model unless you are 100% sure they're of the same pinout. The PSU-side pinouts aren't standardized so you could end up frying something.

Ok. Noted. I won't be using any of his stuff. His stuff is pretty recent whereas mine is 10 years old so I won't risk it. Thanks for the quick replies 🙂
