Hello,

Last year I made a mistake of buying prebuild second hand PC, and it already doesnt really performs well.

It includes:

motherboard: Fujitsu D3400-A

CPU Intel Core i5 6400 Skylake 2.7 GHz

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 4GB

RAM: Samsung DDR4-2132 (1066 Mhz) 8GB

Monitor: AOC 24G2U24 144Hz

1 500GB SSD (windows and some apps mainly)

1 500GB HDD (games)

1 2TB HDD (also games and stuff)

Power supply 65W

So i would like to slowly upgrade my pc, but have no idea how to start (just so you know I dont need super powerful gaming rig, i just want to play games flawlessly without any hickups at least on medium settings). Probably a motherboard and ram would be a good start, but I dont really have a specific budget, which means I would like it to be as cheap as currently possible. Also If I could use any parts that I already have would be awesome. Anybody who would have any bang for buck recommendations for me?

Thanks

Budget (including currency): Not really specified

Country: Slovakia

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Mostly games like FPS, but also new games on at least medium details, Photoshop

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I would like to play games on at least 100 fps and more

This is, depending on the video game being played, more a function of the video card, than anything else, but given the state of video card prices these days, you're better off waiting until things return to normal, unless you have a ton of money you don't mind giving away for some way overpriced graphics card.

But another stick of RAM wouldn't hurt, and those are still fairly affordable (assuming your RAM configuration is a single 8 GB stick, rather than 2 four gig sticks)

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

Thanks for your answer. You assumed right Imn not williing to pay these amounts today. But with ram I have a slight problem and that is my Samsung 8GB ram stick isnt really avvailable to buy. I would sell it and buy two new 8GB but im not entirely sure anyone would be willing to buy this ram, also im thinking about new motherboard cause this one doesnt really support Higher Ram frequencies. Any suggestions with this setup?

You may be wasting your money on that as well, as this is also a function of the CPU. The Ark site for the CPU says it's maximum supported speed is 2133, which you already have

https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/88185/intel-core-i5-6400-processor-6m-cache-up-to-3-30-ghz.html

So you'd be back to square one.

Now you could keep the GPU/SSD/HDD/Monitor and replace everything else with something new like a Ryzen 7 or Intel 10series, but again, with the shortages and overall supply issues, everything is rather more than it should cost.

Have you a budget in mind? And I ask this to determine what our options are.

300$, stick with what you have

800$, opens up lots of options.

This whole desktop (without the monitor and 2TB hdd which i bought separately) cost me around 550$ (500€) and I only bought it cause my laptop wasnt really doing anything for me anymore. Thats why im answering this question like a cheap skate and tell you i would rather do some small upgrades once at a time than buying things at once at higher cost, even right now with prices at the highest.

Im not saying no right its just asi u said maybe I should wait a little bit more and for right now and see what will happen on the market.

Anyway gain really thanks for your answers they really helped

You are welcome. Happy to advise.

As to small upgrades, your GPU is good for now (again, shortage and mining and scalpers) so leave that be.

Your mobo and CPU and RAM...well lets see what we can find (mind you, I"m not where you are, so you may have to adjust based on availability)

https://www.amazon.com/AMD-Ryzen-3600-12-Thread-Processor/dp/B07STGGQ18 (about 200$ USA Money)

Ryzen 5, 3600. That's 3rd gen Ryzen which was released in 2019, using the AM4 platform. Turbos to 4.2Ghz, not too shabby

Here is a nice video on how RAM speeds affect gaming on that CPU

So you can decide if you want to get new faster RAM, or find an additional stick of 2133 and go dual-channel (Ryzen CPUs really benefit from dual channel)

The next trick is the mobo

https://www.newegg.com/asus-rog-strix-b550-f-gam-wif/p/N82E16813119311?Item=N82E16813119311&cm_sp=Dailydeal_SS-_-13-119-311-_-06042021 (also about 200$ USA money)

That's a very nice ATX sized mobo with wireless built in, and PCIe 4.0 so helps when you get a faster GPU. Also RGB if you are into that sort of thing.

So that's about 400$ and you could re-use your existing RAM.

Case might be an issue, dunno how much room is in your existing case, but you can always get a cheap case like this

https://www.newegg.com/p/2AM-041F-00001?Item=9SIATPEEDM6628&Description=mid atx case&cm_re=mid_atx case-_-9SIATPEEDM6628-_-Product&quicklink=true

for the time being. Cases are a highly personal thing, so I don't know what you like colour/style/size wise, I was just making a suggestion

Given the next to no availability of graphics cards, stick with the GTX 1650 for now...UNLESS you can get something like a GTX 1660 / RTX 2060 (Super) / 2070 (Super) / 3060 / 3070 at reasonable price levels.

The Fujitsu motherboard is NOT standard ATX form factor.

If you were to upgrade the motherboard, a new power supply MUST get purchased as well.

If you are going to upgrade the motherboard (brand-new) , don't stick with the Intel 6th Gen -- get something from Intel 10th or 11th Gen, or AMD Ryzen 3000 or 5000 series.

I am not sure if the computer case is ATX compliant too...

If not, CPU + Motherboard + power supply + case might be all upgraded at once.

Are you able to upload a picture of the inside of the case so we can see the motherboard?

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

Thank you all for your great answers,

Im not entirely sure if these photos are going to be enough for you.

1. Im entirely aware that this case isnt anything great as you can see i had to make a little adjustment to hook my ssd

2. I know it doesnt look "enough gamer" without rgb but im not the one who makes a big deal out of those lights, Im more of a if it fits it sits kinda guy and also I would like it to work not flash like crazy for that I have my mouse and keyboard 😄

3. I saw linus´s late video about combining rams so you are saying it might be possible to add other ram with those parameters but other brand?

4. Could a little bit of overclocking work for better performance or this just isnt the case for me in this situation and state of  my pc?

Also just so you know Im from slovakia so Newegg isnt really for me but it doesnt matter I can find any parts here as well so 🙂

Hopefully these photos help out a little bit

As to RAM, as long as the speed and density match, you should be able to add another non-samsung stick.

CPU-Z is a neat little program that should tell you all about your RAM, and then you can find one that matches

I knew you weren't from here, but had no idea where to shop in your country, so showing you the parts I would pick was the best I could do.

The case looks like it *might* fit an ATX-sized mobo, but airflow doesn't look great in that case, so that's an issue.

Also, the power supply looks non-standard, so that'll have to be replaced as well...

Sorry for the late reply. Opened this earlier then forgot to reply.

That could be a really good "sleeper" pc if you wanted it too. I'd measure the holes, but it looks like that motherboard uses ITX standard holes. If that's the case, CPU, Mobo, Ram and PSU could be a good start!

I say PSU because that one is using some proprietary connectors.

Like @Radium_Angelsaid, RAM would be a good start though.

That case might not be the best, but depending on what's behind the holes in the front cover besides HDD bays, some zip ties might allow a fan or two up front for some help there.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

Well, it depends, GPU, yes, RAM, sure, Case, maybe, depends on if you like it or not.

CPU is a dead-end path, so you'd really need to concentrate on CPU and mobo upgrade, and mostly likely a PSU, since that existing one seems to be non-standard.
