Budget (including currency): Around £2000 max

Country: UK

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: CK3, TW Warhammer II, Stellaris, Rimworld, Kenshi, Eu4, Skyrim, Rust. & others.

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): First gaming PC ever & I don't want a prebuilt because the markup hurts me on a spiritual level. Need all peripherals, including desk, monitor, keyboard & mouse etc. So any suggestions would be most appreciated. Desk has to be 1m in length max bc thats all the space I have available. Will probably buy at Amazon & Currys PC world price providing. Honestly, anything above 60 frames would be perfect because I've played on console all my life, but 100 frames and above would allow me to become a PC elitist and finally allow me to post on r/pcmasterrace.

Pc part picker list - https://pcpartpicker.com/list/N2Qvy4

literally any advice or suggestions welcome. IDK what I'm doing but I will eventually.

Might be the best/quickest - or even only - way to get a graphics card.

Can I realistically call myself a gamer, if I only play ONE, twenty year old game...?

Did you test boot it, before you built in into the case?

WHY NOT...?!

Sadly PC parts are a headache to get right now. Here in Canada I’ve been after a very specific psu for a while now, and no signs of it. If you go pre built, at least chances are you won’t overpay much on the graphics card. To me, PC building has been dead since COVID started. I’m very satisfied with what I got, and it can carry me on through these dark times, assuming nothing breaks.

How does this loojk? I'll let you pick the case. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/WtpYF8 (I put in the 3060 Ti as $400 because I am assuming you aren't getting this right now.)

That psu is crap. The rest seems well balanced in my opinion. I’d personally forfeit the mechanical drive and get a higher storage ssd instead.

The other problem is it's not UK pricing/availability... even in the US, you can change the locale, at the top, to UK (well; should be able to).

EDIT:

@DiggerD123 - any reason for not considering AMD?

Its way better value to get a 2TB hard drive for $50 to store games you dont play often on. And use the SSD as a boot drive/storage for games you play alot

Would it be better? If so 100% I would.

The only reason I've chosen Intel is because compared to any amd cpu's it outperformed them on userbenchmark.com, and was a lot cheaper too.

Not the best standard of reference, to be honest.

AMD is (usually) better value for money than Intel & will usually produce less heat/be more thermally efficient.

EDIT:

If it wasn't stoopid o'clock, I'd put a PC Part Picker list together for you... I'll see what I can throw together in the morning.

Damn, I feel really stupid rn. Thanks for letting me know, its absolutely abhorrent that they can get away with doing that.

Are there alternative websites that aren't as biased that I could use in the future if needed?

not really, but u can look up individual reviews and form an educated opinion. Or just ask here, people are generally pretty knowledgeable, although everyone will have their own biases.

Personally i think you should go with what makes the most sense for your build and not necessarily the absolute best, intel 10500/10700/k are pretty good alternatives and might be cheaper than an equivalent AMD for example (really just an example)

Ironically its probably the better option to get a GPU right now, otherwise i'd agree building yourself is usually cheaper and better quality, currently its a bit in to bash prebuilts, but they arent necessarily bad, it really depends  who built them, maybe locally would  be the best option if you can find a known good shop who makes prebuilts - i used to work in one and customers were generally happy and kept coming back for more or upgrades etc, too.

Just something to keep in mind about the current GPU situation.

OK, new day... am I right in thinking that most of the games you've listed are Steam games?

If so, build for the most demanding and adapt for the resolution/refresh rate you're looking to play them at.

Primary research would show that a Ryzen 5 3600 with 16GB RAM & a "fairly recent 8GB graphics card" should do the job.

NOW... despite what I said, previously, about AMD & their value, this list is gonna sound hypocritical:

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/TGPTcT

There's no case in that list, as that's very subjective.

Why 32GB RAM?  To allow for 8GB to be allocated to the iGPU, and plenty for Windows & whatever you end up running.

Why Intel?  Yes, I know... but AMD APU's are (seemingly) too thin on the ground to even be found on PC Part Picker.  I also know that AMD have just launched their 5xxx series APU's, but don't bank on seeing them on shelves for another month, minimum.

Even factoring in a case, keyboard, mouse, monitor & speakers, you should still have 'change' out of £2,000 for a desk & chair.
