Hi all,

just moved into a new house (3 floors and 3000sqft )and my current wifi router is giving me all sorts of headaches. WiFi on it keeps crashing etc… currently using a net gear r7000p. Already have guest network disabled and qos disabled as previously it was also booting devices off of the network.

Any tips on how to improve this WiFi router or suggestions on a new one that won’t have issues?

Thanks!

explain this further? I've never heard of wifi "crashing" on a router

1. WiFi is discoverable but no devices will connect to it until I reboot the wifi router

2. or devices will connect but it will say there’s no internet until I reboot the WiFi router

Sounds like you need a new wifi router more than anything, when was the last time you did a firmware update on it?

Couldn’t tell ya. Which WiFi router do you recommend?

Start with a firmware update, see if it fixes the disconnect issue, beyond that, what is your budget for a new router?

Thanks!

For a home of that size and spanning multiple levels, no single wireless router is going to magically fix poor WiFi. You haven’t even accounted for the layout of each floor with the number/type of walls and other obstructions in the way.

Generally, for such large spaces, you need multiple wireless access points, sometimes at least 1 per level. Some of the signal from the AP above will spill over to the level below, so you might be able to get away with just 2 APs. If basements are involved, you’ll definitely need a separate one for down there.

Because many wireless routers and APs are designed with omnidirectional antennae, the signal is broadcast better in the horizontal plane, less so in the vertical plane to be of any use in a large space. So expecting a single wireless router to do different is not realistic.

  1. What type of internet connection do you have?
  2. What speeds are you paying for?
  3. Do you have the ability to run ethernet? This will only be necessary to link the APs to the primary router?
  4. If you provide us with a floor layout sketch we can probably help you with placement. Identifying locations of poor WiFi and hardware can be added.
