500 would most likely be enough, but it really depends on which unit you have.

What cooler are you using?

I've got a 9600k and I had similar problems with my OC attempts. Tons of freezing until I upgraded the cooler to keep temps down. The best stable OC I've done so far is 4.8GHz all core, which was stable-ish with the previous cooler. I think with the new cooler I could try for higher now (max temp under load is just 77C on one core) whereas before that I was going over 100C.

Thermaltake TR2

That one is rated as B-tier on the PSU Tier List, it has solid review numbers on Amazon, and 500W should be enough headroom for overclocking considering your graphics card is a GTX 980. I don't think the power supply is the issue.

What are the temps and clocks like on your CPU when you overclock it?

(It's B-tier assuming it's the TR2 Gold, the TR2 Bronze is D-tier, but even then, I don't think this is a PSU issue)

The gpu hits about 80°c and the cpu 66°c

That GPU temp is high, but that alone shouldn't cause freezing. Looking at old reviews, the reference GTX 980 regularly ran at 80C in demanding games like Crisis 3 at stock. That's not a good temp, but it's not unexpected for that card.

What clockspeeds are you trying to push them to? And how did you try to validate your OC?

Try setting bios to default and play some games, if no freeze, then OC is unstable.
